East Lincoln junior Chazz Surratt was named N.C. High School Athletic Association male athlete of the year Thursday.

Tainasha Vines of Bunn High was named female athlete of the year. Both of the winners were selected by a special panel that includes media representatives from across the state.

Surratt, a Duke recruit, led East Lincoln’s football team to an unbeaten season and a N.C. state championship. He also led the basketball team to the state championship game. East Lincoln was unbeaten in basketball until the finals, when it lost to four-time state champion Kinston and McDonald’s All-American Brandon Ingram, who will attend Duke to play basketball next season.

In football, Surratt was MVP of the state championship game and finished the season with 51 passing touchdowns and 22 rushing touchdowns. He threw for 4,338 yards and had 5,621 yards of total offense. He was the Southern District 7 player of the year.

In basketball, he averaged 20 points per game, 6.7 rebounds, eight assists and three steals. He was also SD7 player of the year in basketball and MVP of the N.C. 2A Western regional. He did all of this while playing with a torn meniscus in his knee, suffered early in the football season, and had surgery after basketball ended.

Vines has had a remarkable high school career in a variety of sports, including earning state championships last spring, in the long jump and triple jump in outdoor track, and could repeat this month. Vines is her school’s all-time kills leader in volleyball and is a two-time conference player of the year in basketball. She will attend North Carolina on a track scholarship next fall.
