↑Kadarius Lotharp, Sun Valley track: won MVP at the N.C. High School Athletic Association state final, after winning the 100- and 200-meters and running on two winning relay teams.
↑Robinson baseball, softball: both teams beat Hough in the MECKA 8 conference tournament championship games Thursday.
↑Myers Park baseball: Mustangs beat Butler 7-1 in the Southwestern 4A championship Friday. Tournament MVP Bo Owens led Myers Park to its first tournament title since 2009.

Kara Cunningham, Porter Ridge softball: named MVP of the Southwestern 4A championship Friday after leading her team to a 6-4 win over Independence.
Alex Denny, Katie Easley, Sydney Ferren, Hough girls soccer: two goals each in a 9-0 win over Vance Friday. Jordan McArthur and Haley McGoldrick each had two assists.
Jack Fletcher, Providence Day lacrosse: three goals, three assists in a 9-6 win over Cape Fear in the NCISAA playoffs.
Tyson Fortenberry, Ashbrook track: won the discus and shot put at the NCHSAA 3A state track finals Friday.
Julia Loesch, Charlotte Country Day girls lacrosse: four goals in a 17-1 win over Greensboro Day in a first round NCISAA playoff.
Emily Kenley, Lincoln Charter softball: pitcher led her team to a 14-0 win over Cherryville in the Southern Piedmont conference championship. It was Lincoln Charter’s second straight. Lily Pressley, Hannah Taylor, Kyra Johnson and Kayla Helms each had two hits.
Lexi Mitchell, Providence Day softball: 2-run homer in 9-0 NCISAA playoff win over Wake Christian. Teammate Sam Russ also had a homer and pitcher Julianna Roupas had 12 strikeouts.
Corey Thompson, East Gaston track: won both hurdle events at the NCHSAA 3A track finals Friday.
Natalie Wallon, Charlotte Catholic girls lacrosse: four goals in a 17-3 NCHSAA playoff win over Hough.
Covenant Day, Gastonia Ashbrook name basketball coaches
Longtime junior varsity coach Richard Carsner is the new head boys basketball coach at Gastonia’s Ashbrook High.
Carsner was head junior varsity and varsity assistant for 12 years. He is 184-46 as JV coach. His 2014-15 team f inished 18-1. Carsner has also coached tennis for 12 years at Ashbrook.
"Coach Carsner's familiarity and experience within the basketball program will provide great opportunities for continued success,” assistant Principal Craig Smith said. “His JV teams, year in and year out, always played extremely hard, were very responsive to his coaching, and loved to get up-and-down the floor."
▪ Covenant Day named Kameron Law as its new head boys basketball coach.
Area Signees
SouthLake Christian baseball players Corbin Hockensmith, a catcher, and pitcher Andrew Naspinski signed with colleges Friday. Hockensmith signed with Emory & Henry. He is an all-state performer who hit .514 this season with 27 RBIs. Naspinski was 6-2 this season with a 1.5 ERA. He struck out 77 batters in 53 innings.
▪ Will Pleasants became the first Central Academy at Lake Park student to sign a letter of intent. He signed with Methodist University in Fayetteville. Pleasants played for coach Dale Similton for five seasons, beginning in eighth grade. He scored 956 points and won his school’s defensive player of the year three times. His teams won three conference and three conference tournament championships.
