Call them Warriors: Weddington dominates in 2nd straight NC lacrosse state title win
The Weddington HIgh boys lacrosse team left little doubt as to who was the top 3A team in the state.
The Warriors won their second straight 1A/2A/3A state championship Friday night, decisively beating East Chapel Hill 20-6 at the WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary. East Chapel Hill's 16-game win streak ended in the finals.
Anthony Todaro, a sophomore, had eight goals in the game, outscoring East Chapel Hill's entire team. Todaro also added three assists and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. Weddington junior Eamon Murphy added four goals on a night when nine different Warriors scored. net.
Weddington started a little slow, getting 12 shot attempts in the first quarter. Warrior Ryan Goldstein finally opened the scoring with 6 minutes, 33 seconds left in the first quarter. Todaro followed that with a pair of goals, off assists from Goldstein and Will Shipley.
Weddington (17-2) went up 3-0 and never looked back. At one point, the Warriors led 12-1. East Chapel Hill scored twice after that, briefly getting some life, but Weddington slammed the door shut with four more goals in a row.
East Chapel Hill finished the season 19-2. The Wildcats made their second appearance in an NCHSAA State Championship game, returning to the Championship match for the first time since an appearance in the Open Classification final of 2011.
▪ The 4A girls and boys finals will be played Saturday at WakeMed. Cardinal Gibbons and Charlotte Catholic meet at noon in the girls game. The boys final at 2:30 p.m. matches Middle Creek and Lake Norman.
