Marvin Ridge wins 3A state dual-team tennis title

Marvin Ridge finished an unbeaten dual-team tennis season with a grueling 5-4 win against Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons in the N.C. 3A tennis championships in Burlington Saturday.

The teams split the singles matches 3-3. Three of the singles matches split sets. In doubles, each team won a match. So the championship came down to the No. 1 doubles teams. That match went into a tie-breaker. Marvin Ridge’s doubles team of John Hatala and Avanish Madhavaram won 11-10, winning the tiebreaker 7-3 over Matt Galush and Jim Mantyh of Gibbons.

Hatala, who won at No. 2 singles, was named finals MVP after Marvin Ridge finished the season 18-0 and denied Gibbons a fifth straight dual-team championship. Gibbons finished the season at 22-5.

▪ In 4A, Raleigh Wakefield beat Greensboro Page 5-1.

▪ In 2A, Carrboro won its second straight title, 5-2 over Brevard.

▪ In 1A, Raleigh Charter beat Mooresville’s Pine Lake Prep 5-2.
