Jamal Worthy’s 4 TDs lead Butler past Providence

Jamal Worthy ran for four touchdowns in Butler’s 42-21 win against Providence Wednesday at Providence.

Worthy, who rushed for 153 on 17 carries, scored on a 44-yard run on fourth down for the first points and a 1-yard plunge to open a 13-0 Bulldogs gap. He accounted for 100 yards before intermission on 13 carries.

Providence responded on a 75-yard pass from Mason Boothe to Will Kakavitsas to close within a touchdown at halftime and tied the score on Nathan Mattar’s 5-yard run with 9 minutes, 13 seconds left in the third quarter.

Records: Butler 2-2; Providence 1-4.

Three who mattered:

Worthy: The Butler running back churned out 100 rushing yards in the first half with a pair of scores.

Christian Peters: The Bulldogs’ quarterback connected on 8-of-14 passes for 143 yards. He hit 6-of-16 for 106 in the first half.

Kakavitsas: The Providence receiver snagged seven passes for 171 yards and two scores, including a 75-yarder for the Panthers’ first score.

Worth mentioning

▪ Darius Law energized Butler in the third quarter with a 29-yard run on a fake punt into Providence territory. Worthy ended the drive with a 25-yard run for a 20-13 advantage.

▪ Butler got the better results on momentum plays. In addition to Law’s fake-punt run, Donovan Law’s interception on the next series set up Quesean Holmes’ 65-yard scoring run for a 28-13 lead.

▪ Butler rang up four sacks, with Jau’Rice Alexander accounting for a pair in the second half.

▪ Quesean Holmes ran for 146 yards on 17 carries with two touchdowns. He accounted for 116 yards and both scores on nine second-half carries.

Butler travels to Rocky River in the Southwestern 4A opener. Providence visits Ardrey Kell for the SoMeck 4A opener.
