West Charlotte grinds out victory against North Meck

By Herb White

West Charlotte High is OK with playing old-school football.

The Lions used opportunistic defense and 206 rushing yards by Iwuan Jackson to beat North Mecklenburg 20-14 in an I-Meck 4A game Friday on the Vikings’ home field.

West Charlotte, which extended its win streak to four, capped a dramatic fourth quarter with a pair of tide-turning defensive stops and a 58-yard march – with Jackson accounting for every yard on the ground – to pull ahead. Jackson’s game-winning score, a 14-yard off-tackle run with 1 minute, 7 seconds to play, left North Mecklenburg defenders sprawled on the turf, unable to bring him down.

The Vikings, who’ve lost two straight after a 4-0 start, forced a 14-all tie on Aaron Scott’s 32-yard pass to Aamauri Johnson with five minutes left.

Records: West Charlotte 5-1; North Mecklenburg 4-2.

Three who mattered:

Bacari McFadgion: The West Charlotte linebacker turned in the game’s biggest defensive play with an interception and 28-yard return to the North 1 in the fourth quarter. The Lions scored a play later to go ahead 14-7.

Fabian Duncan: North Mecklenburg’s running back was a force with 123 yards rushing on 16 carries.

Iwuan Jackson: West Charlotte’s running back carried the Lions’ attack with 206 yards on 25 attempts. He accounted for every yard on West Charlotte’s final drive, including the go-ahead score from 14 yards out.

Worth mentioning

▪ West Charlotte picked off five passes, including Adonis Gibson’s pick at the Lions’ 2 with 27 seconds left to blunt North’s final drive.

▪ The Lions’ special teams came up big. Khaliq Barnes’ kick return to the West Charlotte 42 provided the Lions excellent field position for the game-winning drive. Julian Wright blocked a punt and returned it 8 yards for a score.

▪ North Mecklenburg’s defense had three sacks and two interceptions.

▪ Will Watts turned in the game’s longest play, a 68-yard touchdown reception from Scott that tied the game at 7-7 in the second.
