Lake Norman girls win, Marvin Ridge boys fall in NCHSAA state lacrosse finals

Lake Norman’s girls won a N.C. High School Athletic Association state lacrosse championship Saturday in overtime. Marvin Ridge’s boys got to overtime, but fell just short.

Lake Norman sophomore Kieran Rinaldi scored two goals in overtime as Lake Norman beat Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons 17-15 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary.

A few hours later, Cardinal Gibbons boys star Nick Forbes scored in sudden death overtime to lift his team to a 13-12 win over Marvin Ridge in the 1A/2A/3A boys final. Apex defeated Charlotte Catholic in Friday’s 4A championship game.

Saturday, Cardinal Gibbons’ boys beat Marvin Ridge for the second straight year in the finals, this time by dominating possession in overtime. Forbes, who finished with four goals and seven assists, was named championship MVP.

Marvin Ridge led 8-6 at halftime and was up three goals in the fourth quarter before Gibbons rallied. Mark Schachte tied the game with 22 seconds left – off an assist from Forbes.

For the game Gibbons had 47 shots, 25 on goal, to 32 for the Mavericks with 17 on goal. Gibbons also had a huge 48-23 edge in ground balls.

In the girls’ final, the game was tied at 13 with 2:15 to play. Rinaldi scored with 18 seconds to play but Gibbons got a score from Erica Skowron just before the horn sounded to force overtime.

The teams then played two three-minute overtimes. Lake Norman got a 16-15 lead after the first, getting goals from Carly Vaccaro and Rinaldi. Rinaldi scored with 1:42 left in the second overtime.

Vaccaro finished with six goals Saturday and 87 for the season. Rinaldi had five times and Julianna Dworschak had three.

Lake Norman outshot Gibbons 36-17 and had a commanding 22-11 edge in draw controls.
