Myers Park, Charlotte Catholic among four area teams playing for NCHSAA tennis titles

Myers Park, Charlotte Catholic, Maiden and Mooresville Pine Lake Prep will play Saturday for state high school girls’ team tennis championships.

Those four schools won regional championships Thursday.

Meanwhile, the state’s volleyball playoff semifinals take place Thursday, and the N.C. High School Athletic Association has released pairings for the boys’ soccer playoffs that begin Saturday.

Here’s a look at autumn sports:

Girls’ tennis

CLASS 4A

Myers Park took four of the six singles matches and clinched victory in the No. 1 doubles match, downing visiting Hough 5-2. The top-seeded Mustangs (21-1) face Cary Green Hope (18-0) in Saturday’s state finals, set for 9:30 a.m. at the Burlington Tennis Center. Hough finished with a 14-2 record.

CLASS 3A

Undefeated Charlotte Catholic (23-0) blanked Concord 6-0 for the Western Region championship. The Cougars meet East Chapel Hill (21-1) at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Burlington Tennis Center for the state championship. Concord finished 16-4.

CLASS 2A

Maiden’s 5-1 victory over Surry Central vaulted the Blue Devils into the state finals, at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the Burlington Tennis Center. Maiden (18-3) will face Durham School of the Arts (22-3) for the title.

CLASS 1A

Pine Lake Prep improved its season record to 9-1, beating East Surry 5-1 in the regional finals. The Pride will face Raleigh Charter (15-3) for the state crown, at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the Burlington Tennis Center.

Boys’ soccer

Charlotte Catholic (3A), Lenoir Hibriten (2A) and Community School of Davidson (1A) will be the top seeds in the Western Region of the state playoffs.

In 4A, Northwest Guilford (18-1-1) is the top seed, with Indian Trail Porter Ridge (21-2) at No. 2.

The top eight seeds in 4A and 1A have first-round byes. Saturday’s opening round in 4A has seven area teams in action – Independence, Mooresville, Ardrey Kell and Providence playing at home, and North Mecklenburg, Lake Norman and Richmond Senior on the road.

Porter Ridge, the Southwestern 4A champion, hosts the East Forsyth-Providence winner in Tuesday’s second round. Other area teams with first-round byes are Myers Park, Hough, South Mecklenburg and South Caldwell.

Charlotte Catholic (21-2-1) hosts No. 32 seed Monroe Parkwood (6-12-1) in a first-round 3A match Saturday. Other area teams in the 3A field are Boone Watauga, Central Cabarrus, Concord, Concord Cox Mill, Gastonia Ashbrook, Gastonia Forestview, Gastonia Huss, Hickory, Kannapolis Brown, Kings Mountain, Marvin Ridge, Monroe, North Iredell, South Iredell, Statesville, Waxhaw Cuthbertson, Weddington and West Caldwell.

In 2A, Hibriten (21-0-2) hosts No. 32 East Gaston (9-10-1) on Saturday. Other area teams in the 2A field are Ashe County, Belmont South Point, Catawba Bandys, East Burke, East Lincoln, Lake Norman Charter, Lincolnton, Marshville Forest Hills, Morganton Patton, Newton-Conover, Newton Foard, North Lincoln, Salisbury, Shelby, West Iredell and West Stanly.

In 1A, Community School of Davidson (18-1-2) will host the winner of Saturday’s Mount Holly Mountain Island Charter-at-Highlands match in Tuesday’s second round. Joining Community School of Davidson with first-round byes were Lincoln Charter and Mooresville Pine Lake Prep. Playing first-round matches Saturday are Queens Grant, Gastonia Highland Tech, Misenheimer Gray Stone Day, Albemarle, Mooresboro Thomas Jefferson, and Monroe Union Academy.

Girls’ volleyball

Marvin Ridge and West Iredell will play Thursday for Western Region championships and berths in Saturday’s state finals matches.

Marvin Ridge, the No. 1 seed in 3A, takes its 42-2 record against visiting West Henderson (32-2) for the West crown. The winner meets the Chapel Hill-at-Greenville Conley victor in Saturday’s finals.

In 2A, 14th seed West Iredell (18-12) visits No. 4 West Davidson (25-6). That winner meets the Trinity Wheatmore-at-Currituck County victor on Saturday for the state championship.

There are no area teams remaining in the 4A and 1A playoffs.

Marvin Ridge senior setter, Adriana Jordan, broke the NCHSAA state career assist record with 28 assists in 3-0 win over Watauga Tuesday.

Jordan now has 3,927 assists in her Mavericks’ career breaking the previous mark held by former Cox Mill setter Courtney Weber (3,901), now playing at the University of South Carolina.


Jordan leads the state with 1,192 assists, according to maxpreps.com.


Jordan has done all of this while leading Marvin Ridge (42-2) to the 3A Western Regional final, where the Mavericks host West Henderson Thursday nght.


The winner faces the winner of Chapel Hill/D.H. Conley in the 3A state championship match in Raleigh, Saturday night at 7:30.
