Like father, Hopewell’s Brice Williams commits to Charlotte 49ers
The Charlotte 49ers didn’t get off to a great start Tuesday night in new coach Ron Sanchez’s first game. Charlotte lost to Chattanooga. But Sanchez and the 49ers received good news Wednesday.
Hopewell High’s Brice Williams, one of Charlotte’s top recruiting targets, picked the 49ers in a news conference at school.
Williams, a 6-foot-8 senior forward, averaged 18 points and four rebounds last season for Hopewell. The Titans were 19-9 under coach Michael McNeil. Williams was named all-conference in the I-MECK 4A.
Williams is the son of former Charlotte 49ers legend Henry Williams, who died last March due to complications from kidney failure.
Over the summer, Brice Williams played with the Team Loaded 704 travel team, which plays on the adidas Gauntlet silver division. In the biggest tournament of the summer, Williams led Team Loaded 704 in scoring, helping the team win the adidas Classic Finale championship in New York in July.
Williams had offers from Bucknell, Charlotte, George Mason, Lafayette, St. Bonaventure and Wake Forest, among others.
The 49ers also have commitments from 6-0 point guard Jahmir Young of DeMatha (Md.) Catholic and 6-10 forward/center Anzac Rissetto of New Zealand.
Phenom Hoop Report, a website that tracks recruiting regionally, ranks Williams No. 15 among N.C. seniors. At Charlotte, Williams will join Concord Cox Mill star Caleb Stone-Carrawell, the son of former Duke great Chris Carrawell. Caleb committed to the 49ers in recent weeks and is also a top 20 in-state recruit.
