Sun Valley QB Sam Howell headlines Southern Carolinas all-conference football team

Charlotte Catholic defensive end Kevin Coss and Indian Trail Sun Valley quarterback Sam Howell were named Southern Carolinas conference defensive and offensive players of the year.

The all-conference team was voted on by league coaches. The Observer’s all-star teams will appear in December.

Charlotte Catholic coach MIke Brodowicz was named league coach of the year after guiding the Cougars to an unbeaten conference title. And Weddington kicker Ian Williams was named special teams player of the year.

Coss is a 6-foot-2, 235-pound senior. He has not committed for college. Coss has 67 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 11 sacks. Coss also had 15 quarterback hurries, one forced fumble and one pass breakup.

Howell, a 6-foot-1, 210-pound senior, threw for 3,196 yards and 36 touchdowns. He ran for 1,231 yards and 16 touchdowns. Howell ended his career with more than 17,000 total yards, setting a new N.C. record. He broke the old record of 16,590 set by Independence’s Chris Leak 16 years ago.
