Friday’s high school football schedule, previews

KEY MATCHUPS

(Observer Sweet 16 rankings are noted)

No. 10 Hough (11-2) at No. 4 Vance (12-1), 7:30 p.m. (4AA playoffs) – Vance’s eight-game winning streak includes a 25-0 blanking of Hough three weeks ago. Can the Huskies’ high-powered passing attack overcome a Vance defense allowing an average of eight points?

No. 7 Myers Park (12-1) at No. 5 Richmond Senior (11-1), 7:30 p.m. (4AA) – Myers Park’s explosive offense faces a defense allowing only 10 points per game. Sophomore QB Caleb Hood leads the Raider attack, with 1,835 passing yards and 21 touchdowns.

Indian Trail Porter Ridge (9-4) at West Mecklenburg (9-2), 7:30 p.m. (4A) – RB Jaylen Coleman and QB Grayson McCall have accounted for more than 3,100 rushing yards this season for Porter Ridge. The Hawks prefer the pass, and QB Preston Brown has thrown for 2,036 yards and 23 touchdowns.

No. 9 Weddington (12-1) at No. 13 Boone Watauga (13-0), 7:30 p.m. (3AA) – Weddington scores points in bunches, and if the game is close, kicker Ian Williams (four field goals last week) is a huge weapon. Bryce Satterfield (1,587 rushing yards, 22 touchdowns), son of Appalachian State head coach Scott Satterfield, leads the Pioneers.

No. 3 Charlotte Catholic (12-1) at No. 11 Gastonia Huss (13-0), 7:30 p.m. (3A) – The first team to six points might win this game. These two state title contenders are superb defensively, with both teams allowing less than seven points per contest.

Catawba Bandys (12-1) at No. 15 Lenoir Hibriten (13-0), 7:30 p.m. (2AA) – Ethan Howard has 11 games of 100 or more rushing yards for Bandys, which has been among the area’s surprise stories this fall. Defending state champ Hibriten is averaging 350 yards and six touchdowns a game – just from its rushing attack!

Chester (13-0) at Union County (11-3), 7:30 p.m. (S.C. 3A) – Chester RB Pha’leak Brown has rushed for 1,360 yards and 27 touchdowns this season, and the Cyclone defense is holding foes to 14 points a game. Union County has won nine straight and is averaging 40 points a contest.
