N.C. Gatorade player of the year Max Wotell was brilliant in Game 1 of the N.C. 3A state baseball series Friday night in Raleigh.

Wotell threw a one-hit shutout as Marvin Ridge beat Pikeville Aycock 2-0 at N.C. State. The best-of-3 series continues Saturday with Game 2 and Game 3, if needed.

Friday night, Wotell struck out eight, allowing only a single by Hank Smitherman in the fourth inning. Wotell is now 14-0 for the season.

Marvin Ridge, in the finals for the time in school history, got a run in the third on an error and a fielder’s choice, and then Chandler Castleberry had a run-scoring triple for the Mavericks in the fourth.
