Stanly County wrestler wins Charlotte Observer athlete of the week

For the third straight week, a West Stanly High School athlete has won an Observer player of the week award.

Wrestler Aidan Hiott won this week athlete of the week award, getting nearly 50 percent of the vote. He finished well ahead of Patton’s Mariano Mendez and Crest’s Jillian Hux.

Hiott’s win comes after back-to-back weekly awards for West Stanly basketball player Austin Medlin.

Hiott, a junior, won his first 12 matches of the season at 132 pounds, including the championship at the Mount Pleasant Invitational Dec. 7. That was his 100th career win.
