No. 4 Carmel Christian repels Harding comeback attempt

The Carmel Christian Eagles withstood a strong comeback effort from Harding University School and wound up knocking off the Lions 62-50 in the USPA Holiday Classic held at Brayboy Gymnasium on the campus of Johnson C Smith University Saturday.

Carmel Christian (13-2) never trailed and used two first quarter runs to extend to a lead. After scoring the game’s first seven points, the Cougars then closed the quarter on a 9-0 and held Harding scoreless for the final 4:30 of the quarter to lead 19-7.

Carmel Christian, who has won the last two NCISAA Division II state championships, looked to be running away with a lopsided result, leading 35-19 with 2:29 left in the second quarter, after Kenny Gwynn Jr hit a three-pointer. But Harding (6-4) fought back, scoring the last nine points of the quarter to trail just 35-28 at the break.

“For some reason our kids stopped playing,” Carmel Christian head coach Joe Badgett said. “We told them that Harding was not going to quit and apparently they didn’t believe us, but give them (Harding) a lot of credit.”

In the third quarter, Harding slowly closed the gap even more and would close to within one, 43-42, with 2:39 left on a bucket from Logan Blair. Carmel would answer by scoring the next six to close the quarter, followed by a three-pointer by Myles Hunter to open the lead to 52-43 early in the fourth.

Harding would get as close as seven points on two different occasions in the fourth, but Carmel held the Lions without a field goal for over four minutes in the fourth and would go on to the victory.

“This is a good test for us,” Badgett said. “When we share the ball and move it around we’re a good team and when we don’t then we struggle. When we needed it we got back to what we do best on both ends of the court.”

Hunter led all scorers with 17 for Carmel, while Justin Taylor had 15, Gwynn Jr had 11 and Glenn Bynum Jr added 10. Harding was led by Funderburk’s 15 points while Blair was the other Lion in double figures with 13.
