‘We want more.’ No. 1 North Meck, hoping to get its mojo back, takes down No. 15 Hough
North Mecklenburg High boys basketball coach Duane Lewis said it took awhile for his nationally ranked Vikings to get over their first loss of the season.
North Mecklenburg, No. 1 in the Observer’s Sweet 16 and No. 41 in MaxPreps national poll, lost on New Year’s Eve. The Vikings lost 77-66 to 3-time Alabama state champion Mountain Brook. Mountain Brook, up to No. 8 in the latest MaxPreps national poll, outhustled North Mecklenburg for most of the loose balls, Lewis said, and Mountain Brook benefitted when Vikings star Tristan Maxwell picked up his fourth foul with two minutes to go in the third quarter.
North Meck led 55-52 when Maxwell went out, but Mountain Brook went on an 8-0 to gain its first lead of the game immediately afterwards. It never gave it away.
And early in Tuesday’s 67-56 win at Hough, Lewis said his team was still in an Alabama funk.
“It’s always tough coming back from Christmas, no matter what your record is,” said Lewis, whose team is now 13-1. “You don’t really know how your team is going to be until you get your first loss. We came out a little sluggish (against Hough). We had to tell them, ‘That (Mountain Brook) game is over.’”
So after trailing 19-13 to end the first quarter, North Meck outscored Hough 54-37 the rest of the way, getting 24 points from Trayden Williams, 17 from Maxwell and 17 more, plus five rebounds from sophomore center Jeremy Gregory.
Lewis thinks, in the end, the lessons learned in the Mountain Brook game may help the Vikings. He said things may’ve come a little too easy in a series of blowout wins early in the season, and the loss maybe reset his team’s focus, particularly after the slow start on the road Tuesday.
“We’re getting a lot of people’s best shots,” Lewis said “That’s the thing. We know we have to be zoned in every game.”
Another thing that’s hurt North is senior forward Chris Ford has been hobbled most of the season with a high ankle sprain. He suffered the injury in the second game of the season against Berry. An MRI didn’t reveal a break, but Lewis said Ford has not been the guy who is capable of scoring 20 points on any given night.
And Lewis also knows that everyone in the I-MECK 4A conference, and everybody in North Carolina chasing his Vikings -- among a handful of favorites to win a 4A state -- don’t care much about injuries or sluggish play.
They just want to beat North.
And that’s where the lessons from the loss may help most of all.
“You can always learn,” Lewis said. “We go in there wanting to win every game, but you can learn from that loss. We are tough but we’ve got to get back to being the aggressor and not assuming someone else (on our team) is going to do it. We’ve got to get that mojo back and we’ve got to be able to run our sets a little better.
“I’m happy with them. I love this group. They’re good guys but there are things we’ve got to get better at because we have high expectations. We want more and we feel the players have more to give, so we’re going to push them and prod them and try to get it all out.”
