With three state champs on schedule, Charlotte Catholic adds another powerhouse for 2020

After winning its third straight N.C. 3A football state championship, Charlotte Catholic has beefed up its schedule for 2020. The Cougars will play three state champions and a New Jersey state power.

Charlotte Catholic has added games with New Jersey power Bergen Catholic and Blessed Trinity, a three-time Georgia 4A state champion. Catholic will host Bergen Catholic in Aug. 28, then face Blessed Trinity Sept. 11.

Bergen Catholic finished the season as the No. 7 ranked team in New Jersey, per MaxPreps.

Blessed Trinity is the 12th team in Georgia High School Athletic Association to win three straight state titles. The Titans (14-1) ended the season ranked No. 10 in Georgia, according to MaxPreps.

The week before the Blessed Trinity game, Catholic will travel to Louisiana for a rematch with Archbishop Rummel. Last month, Rummel won its first Louisiana Division I state championship since 2014. Rummel ended the season ranked No. 1 in MaxPreps’ Louisiana state rankings and No. 19 in its top 25 national experts’ poll.

Rummel, which finished the season 13-0, won 7-3 at Charlotte Catholic last August.

Charlotte Catholic will also face two-time N.C. 3AA state champion Weddington at home Oct. 2

Catholic, which returns 10 starters next season, is in discussions with one other national high school powerhouse for a potential game Aug. 30, athletics director Kevin Christmas told the Observer.
