Charlotte Catholic sophomore is Observer girls basketball player of the week

Charlotte Catholic sophomore Imelda McMenamin is the Charlotte Observer girls basketball player of the week.

McMenamin, a 5-7 guard, averaged 15.5 points and five rebounds last week to lead Catholic to Southern Carolinas conference wins against Union County rivals Cuthbertson and Piedmont.

She won this week’s vote over East Rowan’s Mary Spry and Watauga’s Brooke Byrd.

McMenamin had 17 points and five rebounds in a 51-46 upset of Cuthbertson Jan. 24, to help the Cougars move into a tie for first-place in the conference. Charlotte Catholic also avenged a 57-19 loss at Cuthbertson Dec. 13.

McMenamin also had 14 points and five rebounds in a 55-27 win over Piedmont Jan. 21.

McMenamin is averaging 10 points and four rebounds per game.
