Thursday’s storms force major changes to high school basketball schedule

A band of storms brought win, heavy rain and at least one tornado to the Charlotte-area Thursday.

More than 20,000 Duke Power customers were without power Thursday. On Friday, many school systems in the area, including Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools were closed. When schools close, athletic activities are also postponed.

That means a heavy night of high school basketball is being rescheduled. Here are the latest updates.

Friday’s Key Games

Metrolina Athletic Conference semifinals: the bad weather that blew through the area Thursday forced postponement of the semifinals. The semifinals will be played Friday and the finals Saturday. More information below.

Providence Day (12-12, 4-5 CISAA) at Charlotte Latin (19-7, 6-3), 7 p.m.: One of the area’s best rivalries renews with Providence Day in a three-way tie with Covenant Day and Charlotte Christian for third place. Covenant Day plays at Charlotte Country Day Thursday. Cannon, the regular-season champ, is at Christian Friday. At Charlotte Latin, Providence Day will look to get a win that could drastically improve its playoff seeding.

Tuesday’s Rewind: Indy gets huge win in ‘interesting season’

At the start of the current high school basketball season, Independence coach Preston Davis met with his assistant coaches and warned them to expect what he called “an interesting season.”

The Patriots were working in five new starters after graduating eight seniors from a 22-7 team. And Davis was right.

Independence’s season has been crazy.

The Patriots started 2-5, then won six straight games. After a loss to Henderson Collegiate, Independence won three more in a row, but then dropped two games to Myers Park and Hickory Ridge that damaged its conference championship hopes.

But right after that, Independence is up again. After Tuesday’s 65-56 win over arch rival Butler, Davis’ Patriots are tied for first place in the Southwestern 4A with Hickory Ridge. The Patriots (14-7) also still have an outside shot a fifth straight season wth at least 15 wins.

And the bottom line is this: if the Patriots beat Garinger, Rocky River and Myers Park, they’ll win at least a share of a third straight conference title.

“We knew we had talent,” Davis said, “but guys are in new positions so you never know how long it will take for teams to jell and figure stuff out. But one of the things I can say as the year has gone on is we’ve competed every game and we have had some unfortunate breaks.”

Independence has been without 6-5 post De’Drick Givens (knee) for a few games. Butler attacked the Patriots inside, as 7-foot sophomore center Patrick Wessler had a game-high 25 points.

Independence got 21 points from Jalen Hinton, 14 from Anthony Allen and a big 20-12 push in the fourth quarter that ultimately decided the game.

“It’s always good to beat your rival,” Davis said. “You know that. It was hard fought game. Obviously, the crowds were into it. I’m proud of our guys for staying focused and continuing to play through adversity. We had our hands full.

“We have lost to some quality opponents but we just try to keep learning from it and keep going. But it’s been a wild ride. We played a tough non-conference schedule in hopes it would get us prepared to win conference. So we are kind of right where we want to be. Now let’s see if we can finish it off.”

Hickory Ridge beat Myers Park 63-56 to remain tied with Independence for first place in the conference. Xavier McKelvy (29 points) and Drake Maye (20) led Myers Park (15-6, 8-3). Jordan Marsh had 17 for Hickory Ridge (17-4, 9-2)

Monday’s key games

Butler (10-11, 6-5 Southwestern 4A) at Hickory Ridge (17-4, 9-2), 7:30 p.m.: With games against East Meck (3-18, 2-9) and Porter Ridge (11-10, 5-6) next week, Hickory Ridge can win at least a share of the league title by winning out. It’s tied with Independence (14-7, 9-2) for first place. Butler, fighting a two-game losing streak, will try to play spoiler.

No. 11 North Mecklenburg girls (16-4, 9-2 I-MECK) at No. 3 Mallard Creek (18-2, 9-2), 6 p.m.: the teams are tied with Vance (17-4, 9-2) for first place in the league with three games left. And both come in hot. Mallard Creek has won three straight games. North Meck has won five straight.

OT win over Ardrey Kell delivers first place for Olympic

Olympic missed two free throws and a tip-in attempt in the final three seconds of regulation Tuesday night against visiting Ardrey Kell in a SoMeck 7 4A Conference first-place showdown.

“Don’t worry,” Olympic coach Barry Terry told his team, as the Trojans prepared for overtime, tied 66-66. “Just keep playing defense. It will work out.”

And that’s pretty much the way it went, as the Trojans outscored the Knights 15-8 in overtime and came away with an 81-74 victory.

“That’s our trademark -- defense,” associate head coach Jeff Berry said afterward. “We play that tight defense for the whole game, and it tends to wear down an opponent.”

In the four minutes of overtime, Olympic (16-5, 8-2) hit 4-of-4 from the floor and out-rebounded Ardrey Kell (16-6, 7-3) 3-0. The Knights made just 1-of-7 from the floor.

The Knights went ahead 5-3 just two minutes in the game and never trailed until the closing three minutes of regulation.

Ardrey Kell pulled ahead by margins of up to eight points in the first half, but Olympic’s defense enabled the Trojans to overcome some cold shooting in the early going.

“At halftime, we told them to tighten up,” Berry said. “They backdoor-ed us several times. We did a good job of preventing that in the second half.”

Ardrey Kell led 60-54 after an Anthony Testa basket with 6:04 left in the fourth quarter. That’s when the Trojans battled back.

They appeared to have a great chance to win in regulation. With the game tied at 66, the Knights fouled Olympic’s Trevon Williams. He missed both free throws, and then Josh Banks missed the tip-in.

Those were about the only missed by Williams and Banks in the late going, as they 21 of Olympic’s final 23 points.

THREE WHO MATTERED

Trevon Williams, Olympic: He scored a game-high 28 points, including 12 in the first half, when the Trojans were struggling.

Josh Banks, Olympic: Banks, the team’s leading scorer this season, had 24 points. He hit 8-of-9 from the foul line, including 4-of-5 in overtime, and had seven rebounds.

Evan Smith, Ardrey Kell: Smith had a big night, making 10-of-12 from the floor, scoring 23 points, and grabbing six rebounds.

WORTH MENTIONING

The victory was the seventh in a row for Olympic. Its last loss came on Jan. 7, by a 77-68 score at Ardrey Kell.

Tuesday’s contest was the last at home for the Trojans, who finish conference play with two road games.

The girls’ game also went to overtime, but Ardrey Kell prevailed 41-31. The Knights’ Evan Miller scored eight of her team’s 12 points in the extra session.

They said it

“I’m afraid we haven’t seen the last of Ardrey Kell. They’ve got a really good team, and I suspect we’ll see them again in the conference tournament.” -- Olympic associate head coach Jeff Berry.

What’s next?

Ardrey Kell is home against Harding on Friday. Olympic travels to West Mecklenburg the same night.
