Hough, Fred T. Foard win NCHSAA dual-team wrestling championships Saturday
Two Observer-area teams won N.C. High School Athletic Association state wrestling championships Saturday.
Hough High won its first dual team state title, beating Cardinal Gibbons 33-31 in the 4A final. Foard won its third dual team championship and its first since winning the 2015 2A crown. Foard beat Croatan 59-9.
In 4A, Hough trailed Gibbons until the final bout at 113 pounds. That’s when Hough’s Richard Treanor managed a pin of Gibbons’ Hunter Gundry at the 30 second mark. The pin earned six points and the two-point win.
Treanor was named 4A most outstanding wrestler.
Hough trailed 15-0 early and was down 25-6 heading into the 170-pound match when Hough’s Anthony Fabian scored a major decision and teammate Julian Rawlins got a technical fall win at 195. Hough also got wins from Dominic Harris at 220 and Jacob Thomasson at 285.
That closed the score to 28-27 before Treanor’s state championship pin.
In the 2A final, Foard wrestlers won by fall in the first four matches, led off by Spencer Bechtol’s opening match pin at 120 pounds. He won in 51 seconds. Teammates Jamie Richard (126), Zane Birtchet (132), and Braden Wharton (138) followed with win by fall. Foard’s Landon Foor (195 lb.) and Brock Carey (113 lb.) also earned wins by fall for the Tigers.
Foard wrestlers also turned in strong performances with technical fall victories at 152 pounds for Justin Whalen and 170 pounds with Hunter Lloyd. There was a single major decision for the Tigers going to David Weaver at 160 pounds.
Wharton was named the 2A Dual Team Playoffs Most Outstanding Wrestler for his efforts this week.

Girls’ wrestling finals a success -- too much of a success

CONCORD Caelyn Davis took a look around the inside of Carolina Courts shortly after noon Saturday and marveled at the throngs of people that packed the sports arena for the girls’ state wrestling championship.
“It’s amazing how it’s grown!” said Davis, a Cox Mill senior who compiled a 35-10 record this season against male competition.
The Cabarrus County fire marshal agreed. Minutes later, authorities ordered officials of the wrestling tournament to empty the building, then allow only a percentage of those who had been inside to return.
“It’s successful,” said Ed Duncan, who ran the meet for the N.C. High School Athletic Association. “I guess it’s a little too successful!”
Memo to the NCHSAA: Move the girls’ finals to a bigger venue next year.
The inaugural championship, actually known as the N.C. Women’s Wrestling Invitational, drew a field of nearly 80 wrestlers to a Winston-Salem arena last year. On Saturday, more than 180 female high school wrestlers competed.
Davis was among the standouts, She swept through her three matches, pinning her opponent in the first period of the finals in the 106-pound B bracket. The N.C. High School Athletic Association was forced to create A and B divisions at 106 pounds, due to the large number of entries.
Cox has been wrestling since she was 8 years old. She marveled at the growth of the sport in recent years.
“As a freshman and sophomore, there was nothing like this,” she said of the state championship.
“And the sport keeps growing.”
The sport also is growing at the college level. Next school year, Cox will take advantage of something else not available a few years ago -- a college scholarship for a female wrestlers. She will attend Limestone College and compete on the new women’s team there.
“My dad (Ryan Davis) didn’t want me to wrestle,” Caelyn Davis said. “Basically, I just cried until he changed his mind and gave in. Now he’s one of my biggest supporters.”
Winning the title Saturday gives Davis another honor. In two weeks, she and other girls’ victors will join their male counterparts in the Walk of Champions at the boys’ state meet in Greensboro.
“That will be a thrill,” she said.
Butler High’s Elisa Cox narrowly missed that honor. She dropped a 6-2 overtime decision to Sydney Sullivan of Northern Nash in the 132-pound finals and finished second.
“This has been a good season for me,” she said. “I missed a lot of last season with an injury, and I had Tommy John surgery on my elbow. But I’ve recovered and made the most of my senior year.”
Like Davis, Cox is a wrestling scholarship winner. She will attend Adrian College in Michigan next year.
South Stanly wrestlers Ruby Eason and Savanna Hurley will have a chance to do it again in what should be an even bigger field next year. Eason, a sophomore, finished fourth in her weight class. Hurley, a junior did not make the top four. But they enjoyed themselves.
“I went out for the team because I wanted to say that I had done this,” Eason said. “I’ve had a good time.”
Hurley added, “We’ve gotten good support. This is definitely a growing sport.”
Part of the overcrowding Saturday was because a middle school tournament was added to the girls’ championship.
After clearing the building around 12:30 p.m., tournament officials re-admitted female wrestlers, their coaches and fans about a half-hour later. The middle school tournament wasn’t resumed until later in the afternoon.
Worth noting
▪ Parkwood was the only school with two champions Saturday. Aurora Efird captured the 126-pound title, and freshman Savannah Bramhall won at 152 pounds.
▪ South Caldwell’s Abby Phillips won the 120 B title, repeating as state champion. She missed much of this season with a knee injury but returned to action a few weeks ago.
▪ Mecklenburg’s sole champion was Mallard Creek’s Ashley Shinn (285).
