Myers Park swimmer wins close race for Observer athlete of the week

Myers Park High swimmer Kiley Wilhelm is the Charlotte Observer’s high school athlete of the week after one of the closest votes in the history of the award.

Wilhelm won by fewer than 700 votes over Hough’s Grace Rainey. Cuthbertson’s Alison Thome was third, about 600 votes short of Rainey.

Each swimmer led the poll at some point during the voting.

Wilhelm is a Myers Park freshman who won the 4A state title in the 200 individual medley, while finishing as runner-up in the 100 butterfly at 4A state championships at Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary Feb. 7.

Wilhelm also teamed with Sophia Lindauer, Claire Russell and Liza Whitmire to finish as 4A state runner-up in the 200 medley relay.

Wilhelm helped the Myers Park girls’ swim team to a third place finish.
