Friday’s Prep Rewind: Independence boys, Myers Park girls gain shares of SW4A titles

Note: Scroll down for high school conference tournament pairings and Saturday’s NCISAA playoff coverage

You think Independence’s narrow victory Friday night at Myers Park was something?

Wait until next week, says Preston Davis, head coach of the Southwestern 4A co-champion Patriots.

Davis’ team captured a share of the regular-season title with a 56-53 victory Friday over the host Mustangs before a full-house crowd.

But they had to survive two late attempts by Myers Park to tie the game. And now they get to do it all over again next week, in the conference tournament.

And as Davis notes, there’ll be additional company. Joining the Patriots and Mustangs will be Hickory Ridge, which tied Independence for the regular-season championship, and Butler, which gave all the contenders fits this season.

There were dramatics in the girls’ opener Friday, too.

Myers Park trailed for nearly three quarters of its game against Independence before rallying in the fourth quarter for a 54-44 victory. That gave the Mustangs a share of the girls’ championship with Butler.

“This is a conference with a lot of good teams,” Davis said. “Next week will be very interesting. There’ll be some very good basketball.”

The Independence boys (17-7, 12-2) never trailed against Myers Park (17-7, 10-4), but the Mustangs stayed within five points in the final quarter.

Nygell Verdier made two free throws with 11 seconds left, giving Independence its 56-53 lead. Myers Park then set up a final play, with Xavier McKelvy, who made a trio of 3-pointers in the game, attempting a 3 from the right corner. But his shot was blocked by Verdier.

The Patriots grabbed the loose ball and Myers Park fouled Divine Allah with 1.5 seconds remaining. Allah missed both free throws, and the Mustangs’ Drake Maye grabbed the rebound. Maye threw the inbound pass, but his throw to McKelvy went out of bounds, ending the final threat.

“This is a team that had some growing pains,” Davis says. “We let two games slip away early in the conference season. But we’ve grown.”

Patriots’ guard Anthony Allen, who scored 13 points, said his team has surprised some people.

“We lost a lot of seniors from last year, and I don’t think people expected much from us,” Allen said. “But here we are.”

In the girls’ game, Bralyn Milton scored 11 first-quarter points as Independence raced to a 14-6 lead.

But the Mustangs battled back, and then guard Mia Xerras shot them into the lead in the second half. She scored 18 of her 22 points in the final two periods, hitting three three-pointers.

FIVE WHO MATTERED

Nygell Verdier, Independence boys: Verdier, a 6-foot-5 senior, scored a game-high 20 points and made four key free throws down the stretch.

Anthony Allen, Independence boys: Allen, a 5-10 senior guard, scored 13 points and played excellent defense on Myers Park’s quick guards.

Drake Maye, Myers Park boys: Maye had a rough start, going scoreless in the first half on 0-of-6 shooting. But he erupted for 11 third-quarter points and finished with 13, adding seven rebounds and two blocked shots.

Mia Xerras, Myers Park girls: Xerras scored 22 points, including four 3-pointers.

Bralyn Milton, Independence girls: Milton scored 18 points, hitting 5-of-6 shots from the foul line in the second half after a nine-point first quarter.

WORTH MENTIONING

In the boys’ race, Independence and Hickory Ridge tied at 12-2, with Myers Park at 10-4 and Butler fourth at 8-6.

In the girls’ race, Myers Park and Butler tied at 13-1, with Independence (10-4) and Hickory Ridge (8-6) rounding out the top four.

Foul-shooting troubles prevented Independence from pulling away from Myers Park in the boys’ game. The Patriots hit 6-of-13 from the foul line. Myers Park had only four free throws in the game, making three.

Independence finished shooting 23 of 52 from the floor in the boys’ contest. Myers Park made just 22 of 58 shots. The Mustangs outrebounded Independence 33-28.

In the girls’ game, it was Myers Park getting to the foul line much more often. The Mustangs didn’t fare well, though, hitting 12 of 23. Independence made 7 of 14 free throws.

Something for Southwestern 4A girls’ coaches and players to worry about: Myers Park shared the conference regular-season title with a team that has no seniors.

THEY SAID IT

“These guys played a lot of basketball before this season. But they didn’t play a lot of basketball with each other. It took us a while to work together.” — Independence boys’ coach Preston Davis

Friday’s Elevator

Dane Bertolina, Imelda McMenamin, Charlotte Catholic girls: So nice Friday, they’ll make our lists twice (see below). Both Cougars made seven (!) 3-point shots in a 73-41 win over Marvin Ridge.

Providence girls: Held off a big challenge from Ardrey Kell to win 51-50 and finish the regular season at 21-2, the best record in school history. Providence was also unbeaten in conference for the first time ever. Evan Miller had 23 for Ardrey Kell.

Ja’el Miller, Central Cabarrus girls: Scored her 1,000th point in a 58-39 win over Northwest Cabarrus. Miller (16 points, seven assists), Aniyah Tate (10 points, 10 rebounds) and Mariah Barrie (18 points, 10 rebounds) led the win on a night when Central won the outright South Piedmont 3A title for the second straight season.

Cal Reed, Lake Norman Charter: After setting the school’s all-time assists record this week, Reed broke the steals’ record in Friday’s 66-30 win over West Lincoln. Reed and Lake Norman Charter clinched the South Fork 2A championship. Reed had 12 points, Donovan Atwell had 15.

Jessica Timmons, North Meck girls: The top-50 national recruit had 27 points, 14 rebounds in a 54-48 win over Lake Norman.

Forest Hills: Beat Anson County 78-40 and became first Union County team to finish the regular season undefeated. Forest Hills (23-0) has a senior class that leaves with a four-year conference record of 39-1.

Guilford County star delays game with backboard shattering windmill

Friday night, Northwest Guilford senior guard Christian Hampton literally shut the gym down at Greensboro Grimsley with a left-handed windmill.

Hampton took a pass from a teammate, planted and showed why he’s considered one of the best athletes in his area.

Because most high schools don’t have a backup goal, the game was postponed until 5 p.m. Saturday.

The Best Things I Heard About Friday

The South Meck girls polished off their sixth straight winning season under coach Cristie Mitchell on Friday. Mitchell took over a team that had gone 0-23, 0-23 and 6-19 in the three years before she got there. Her first three teams were sub-.500 but she has averaged more than 18 wins per season since. South Meck (19-4) beat West Meck 58-18 Friday. Senali Moss (14 points, eight steals, five assists), Katie Houpt (11 points) and Markella Allen (career-high 12) led the Sabres.

Lake Norman Charter’s Marissa Sorviollo hit the game-winning 3 with 5.2 seconds left in a 54-51 win over West Lincoln. Jillian Villanti made the pass. ... Weddington sophomore Chase Lowe had 27 points, nine rebounds, five assists in a 73-61 win over Cuthbertson.

Quite the duel between two of the top area players outside Mecklenburg County on Friday. Newton-Conover’s girls beat East Lincoln. Newton-Conover’s Rutgers recruit Chyna Cornwell had 35 points. East Lincoln’s Brianna Tadlock had 32 points, five assists, two steals, two blocks and two rebounds.

Mallard Creek’s girls, No. 3 in the Sweet 16, had to work to tie Vance for the I-MECK conference title. Mooresville was tied with the Mavericks heading into the fourth quarter of what became a 57-53 Mallard Creek win. Mavs senior Neveah Brown scored seven of her 14 points in the fourth quarter, when Mallard Creek got a clutch 3-pionter from Kennedy Simpson, who finished with 15 points.

The Southwestern 4A coaches will likely pick their all-conference team Saturday during meetings for conference tournament seeding. Just a guess that Independence’s Preston Davis will win boys coach of the year. Independence graduated eight seniors last season, among them four college basketball players: Matthew Smith (Murray State), AJ McKee (Queens), Tyler Harris (Western Carolina) and Raja Milton (Louisburg).

Ashbrook girls finished 12-0 in Big South 3A play with a 72-16 win over arch rival Hunter Huss on Friday. ... On Senior Night, Jeremiah Murphy had 30 points, 10 rebounds, four steals for Queens Grant in a 76-44 win over Bradford prep. Murphy and Loren Boyette are now the Nos. 3 and 4 scorers in school history.

Friday’s #BIG5 Girls Top Performers
