Prep Wrestling Rewind: Hough edges Mooresville in 4A regionals

Jun Figueredo wrestles against McDowell’s Tobias Finn in Saturday’s 132-pound final in the 4A regional at Hough
Jun Figueredo wrestles against McDowell’s Tobias Finn in Saturday’s 132-pound final in the 4A regional at Hough Special to the Observer

He learned to wrestle in Okinawa, learned a new version of the sport in Spokane, Wash., and is named for a Japanese friend of his family.

And Jun Figueredo is one reason why Hough, which won the 4A state dual meet wrestling championship a week ago, added the 4A West Regional individual wrestling title Saturday.

Wrestling in their home gym, the Huskies edged neighborhood rival Mooresville for the crown, and the two teams will be among the favorites in next weekend’s state meet in Greensboro.

Each team will send three weight class champions and 10 state qualifiers to Greensboro, but Hough edged Mooresville 201.5-194 on the basis of more pins and superior decisions along the way.

Brandt Fajerman (106 pounds) and defending state champion Richard Treanor (113) joined Figueredo as champions for the Huskies. Mooresville’s champions were defending state champion Isaac Shaw (152), Dilyn Roudesbush (182) and Austyn Barton (285).

Figueredo, a junior, finished third in the regionals a year ago but failed to place at state. He beat McDowell’s Tobias Finn 13-8 in Saturday’s final, but the match got a bit iffy at the finish.

With Hough trying to add every possible point, fans began yelling for Figueredo, winning 13-6 with a half-minute left, to go for a near-pin, win by a major decision, and add another team point. Figueredo made a quick move in the closing seconds, but Finn responded with a takedown and the match ended with the Hough wrestler scrambling to stay off his back.

“That can be risky,” Figueredo said of trying to add to his victory margin. “I was extremely tired, and he’s very strong.”

But in the end, Figueredo held on and says he “has a lot of high hopes” for next weekend.

His road to Hough has zig-zagged across the globe. “I come from a military family,” he said. “We moved a lot.”

He was born in Hawaii, moved to San Diego, and then to Okinawa. That’s where he learned to wrestle at age 8. His first name (pronounced June) is the same as a Japanese friend his parents met years ago. From Okinawa, the family moved to Seattle, and then to Cornelius.

“I wrestled freestyle in Okinawa but switched styles when we moved to Washington,” he said.

Figueredo said he relies on speed and knowledge of the sport against stronger opponents. “A lot of it is anticipation,” he said. “I try to get around my opponent before they can make a move.”

Hough had a runner-up, four third-place finishers, and two fourth-place wrestlers Saturday. Mooresville had two runners-up, four in third place, and one in fourth.

Worth noting

The I-Meck 4A Conference accounted for four of the top five team positions. Lake Norman was third and Mallard Creek fifth, with Myers Park fourth.

Mallard Creek’s Quantavius McNeil, who finished third at 138 pounds, was among several wrestlers notching his 100th career victory.

And Olympic’s Colby Schefers, third at 145 pounds, might be the only state qualifier who also was a football all-star as a kicker. He played in the Mecklenburg Senior Bowl in December.
