NCHSAA indoor track: 5 Meck individual titles, 2 Union County state team champs

Mecklenburg County produced five indoor track state championships Saturday in Winston-Salem.

Berry (3,200 girls) and Mallard Creek (1,600 girls) took relay titles. Harding’s Akala Garrett won the 55 meter hurdles. Independence’s Caroline Backhus won the girls 55-meter wheelchair race and Berry’s Sanu Jallow won the 500-meters. Jallow also ran the anchor leg for Berry in its relay win.

Spencer Evans from Lake Norman established a new state meet pole vault record, clearing the bar at 16-7.

Panther Creek’s boys and girls, from Cary, won the team titles. It was the second for the Panther Creek boys and the first for the girls.

Panther Creek’s girls finished with 69 points. Harding (30) finished fifth and Mallard Creek (27) was fifth.

The Panther Creek boys had 50.5 points, just edging Raleigh’s Millbrook High (49.5). Mooresville (22.5) finished seventh, the highest from the Observer-area and the only area school in the top 10.

3A: Cuthbertson girls, Weddington boys dominate again

Once again, Union County is flexing its muscle in 3A indoor track.

Friday night in Winston-Salem, Cuthbertson’s girls won their fourth straight N.C. 3A indoor track state final. Weddington’s boys won third in a row.

Cuthbertson’s girls had 106.5 points, easily distancing the field. Parkland Magnet was second (47 points) and Marvin Ridge (45) third. Weddington also won in dominant fashion on the boys side, totaling 95.5 points. Cuthbertson (61) was second followed by Mount Tabor (53.5)

1A/2A: North Lincoln runners have strong performance

North Lincoln produced five N.C. High School Athletic Association 1A/2A state champions Saturday in Winston-Salem.

Burlington Cummings won the girls state championship. North Lincoln was third. Atkins won the boys state title. North Lincoln was second.
