High School Sports

Third round of the NC high school basketball playoffs is Saturday. Here’s the schedule.

The third round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs tips Saturday with 16 teams left in each of the classifications.

In the 4A boys and girls brackets, the Sweet 16 round will have a heavy Mecklenburg County flavor.

There are six boys teams from the Charlotte-area remaining in the 4A West draw: Ardrey Kell, Hough, Independence, North Mecklenburg, Olympic and Vance. North, Vance and Hough are all from the I-MECK 4A conference.

In the 4A East, there are three Triangle teams left — Garner, Millbrook and Leesville Road.

On the girls side, four Mecklenburg County teams remain. I-MECK 4A rivals Mallard Creek, Vance and North Mecklenburg, plus SoMECK champion Providence.

Wake County is also strongly represented with Southeast Raleigh, Apex Friendship, Holly Springs, Millbrook and Wakefield all still alive.

Saturday’s winners advance to state quarterfinal games Tuesday, at higher seeds. The regional round is March 7.

The state finals will be Saturday, March 14. The 1A and 3A finals will be at N.C. State. The 2A and 4A finals will be at UNC.
