Mecklenburg Co. baseball star is first Observer boys spring athlete of the week
Carmel Christian pitcher Cooper King is the first Charlotte Observer spring sports boys athlete of the week.
King received more than 11,000 votes, narrowly edging Cuthbertson’s Carson Hegele. Weddington’s Anthony Todaro was third.
King, a senior, had 17 strikeouts in six innings to lead the Cougars to an 11-2 win over Hickory Grove March 6.
King, an N.C. State commit, struck out every batter in the lineup at least once, striking out batters six through nine twice in the same game.
He also earned the save with two strikeouts in a 7-6 win over Lake Norman Charter March 4.
King was also 3-for-7 at the plate with a home run and five RBI in two games this week.
