Iredell Co. softball player is first Observer girls spring sport athlete of the week
The first Charlotte Observer girls spring sports athlete of the week contest drew a record number of votes and delivered a winner from Iredell County.
Lake Norman softball player Amy Meister got more than 29,000 votes to win. There were more than 124,000 votes cast in total, a record since the Observer began allowing readers to vote for player of the week last fall.
Meister, an Emory & Henry recruit finished ahead of East Lincoln’s Taylor Barrineau and Myers Park’s Madi Lojko.
Lojko hit .500 with two home runs and nine RBIs in wins over Cox Mill, North Lincoln and West Iredell last week.
Meister hit a three-run home run with her team down 8-3 in the top of the 7th inning at North Lincoln, to spark a six-run inning and a 9-8 win March 4.
Meister also had 19 put outs and assisted on one double play as Lake Norman’s first baseman.
