Stanly County star wins the Observer’s boys basketball ‘Ultimate’ player of the week award
West Stanly High School’s Austin Medlin is the Charlotte Observer ‘Ultimate’ boys high school basketball player of the week.
Throughout the high school basketball season, the Observer held a weekly vote for its player of the week award. Players were nominated by coaches and the Observer would allow readers to vote on 10 finalists.
Medlin won the weekly award twice. The first win came in late November, after he had 45 points against Albemarle and was averaging 32 points per game. He won again the following week, after erupting for 26 points and 35 points in back-to-back games, leading his team to a 5-0 start.
At the end of the season, the Observer compiled all previous weekly player-of-the-week winners and let readers vote on an overall winner, the ‘Ultimate’ player of the week.
Medlin got more than 22,000 votes, finishing ahead of Charlotte Christian’s Peter Lash and Pine Lake Prep’s Jacob Morgan.
Medlin, a junior, was named Rocky River conference player of the year. The 6-foot-1 junior guard averaged 20.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and two steals. He led the Colts to their fifth straight playoff appearance while shooting 39 percent from 3-point range and 82 percent from the free throw line.
