Mooresville High’s new football coach was a big winner in Rowan County

Mooresville High School has named Joe Nixon as its new head football coach.

Nixon was head coach at North Rowan from 2012-14 and has been head coach at West Rowan since 2015.

Nixon’s overall record is 72-33 and his teams won two conference championships. Nixon was an assistant coach at West Rowan from 2003-11, a period when the team won three straight state championships.

Nixon’s five teams at West Rowan produced two double-digit winning seasons and no losing years. His 2019 team was 9-5 and reached the third round of the playoffs.

At Mooresville, Nixon replaces Thad Wells, who was 16-10 in two seasons. Mooresville has had six winning seasons in the past seven years.

Nixon will be the school’s third head coach since 2017, when Marty Paxton left after a 4-8 season.
