Hopewell hires former West Charlotte assistant as new head boys basketball coach

JaRon Goodson is the new head boys basketball coach at Hopewell High School.

Goodson, 33, was an assistant boys varsity and head junior varsity coach at West Charlotte for the past four years. Prior to that, Goodson was a head coach and an assistant coach at Cape Fear High in Fayetteville and spent two years at a Fayetteville middle school.

Goodson is also the coach of 17U Team United boys travel basketball team, which is based in Charlotte and produced players such as Patrick Williams (Florida State), Luke Maye (UNC), Kennedy Meeks (UNC) and Ian Miller (Florida State).

“We are excited to add Coach Goodson to the Hopewell family and our already great coaching staff,” said Hopewell athletic director Brian Bourque. “He impressed us with his energy and passion for the game of basketball and molding young men into future leaders in the community. You can tell he is a tireless worker and will do whatever it takes to get the job done. He will bring value to not only the basketball program, but to the Hopewell Athletic Program as a whole. I think he’ll come in and make an immediate impact.”

At Hopewell, Goodson will replace Michael McNeil, who resigned last month. McNeil has coached the Titans since the start of the 2016-17 season. His teams were 12-13, 19-9, 16-11 and 6-19.

The Titans have made the playoffs in two of the past three seasons and McNeil was the 2017-18 I-MECK conference coach of the year.

Goodson is a graduate of Leesville Road High School where he played under coach Daryl Robinson. He received his Bachelor Degree in Physical Education and Health from Fayetteville State University in 2009 and is working toward completing his masters in Sports Management and Administration from Liberty University.

“Although it was a dream of mine to be a head coach again, I always said that I would not leave West Charlotte for just any job and that it had to be the perfect job,” Goodson said. “After reaching out to a few people and talking it over with (West Charlotte coach) Jacoby (Davis), I felt that it was a perfect fit and an opportunity that I could not let pass. The Hopewell community is as hungry and passionate as I am about building successful men and putting a winning product on the basketball court. I am excited, and I look forward to collaborating with the staff and administration on how we can push our students to the next level.”
