High School Sports

Who’s No. 1 in the ‘Way-Too-Early’ Charlotte Observer Sweet 16 prep football poll?

Last season, six high school football teams in the Charlotte Observer’s coverage area won North Carolina state championships.

At least three of those teams — N.C. 4AA champion Vance, N.C. 3AA champion Weddington and N.C. Division I Independent Schools champion Charlotte Christian — looked primed to make another state title run in 2020.

But the No. 1 team in the annual “Way-Too-Early” Charlotte Observer Sweet 16 poll isn’t any of those four.

Right now, more than two months before the start of the season, the team to beat looks like the Hough Huskies.

Hough, from Cornelius, returns 17 starters and a staggering 47 lettermen from an 8-5 team last season. After a 1-3 start, Hough finished 7-2 in 2019, losing to state powers Mallard Creek and Richmond Senior, but beating eventual N.C. 4AA state champion Vance 42-28. That Hough team was rather young.

This one won’t be.

Hough, which has produced eight consecutive winning seasons, seems poised to field the best team in school history.

This year’s Huskies are led by running back Evan Pryor, a four-star national recruit committed to Ohio State. He’s one of a long list of Huskies with serious college attention, including linebacker Kaci Seegars (committed to Texas A&M), receiver Jesiah Davis (committed to Virginia), safety Bralyn Oliver (committed to Louisville) and corner Mario Love (committed to N.C. State).

Of the top 100 seniors in North Carolina, according to the 247Sports rankings, 11 attend Hough. And that doesn’t include defensive tackle Curtis Neal, ranked No. 8 among rising juniors in the state, or rising sophomore quarterback Tad Hudson, who has offers from Arkansas, Kentucky, North Carolina, N.C. State and Texas.

Note: three other Observer-area teams won state titles in 2019: Charlotte Catholic won the N.C. 3A title, Providence Day won the private school Division II title and Shelby won the 2AA crown.

Key Returning Starters: Evan Pryor, Sr., RB (5-10, 190); Timmy Artis (Jr.), Sr., OL (6-4, 285); Greyson Hutchins, Sr., WR (5-10, 185); Coen Sutton, Sr., WR (6-2, 200); Tyler Hoff, Sr., WR (5-10, 185); Mario Love, Sr., DB (5-10, 180); Sean Brown, Sr., DB (6-1, 192); Curtis Neal, Jr., DL (6-2, 287); Isaac Walker, Sr., OLB/DE (6-3, 225); Julian Rawlins, Sr., DE (6-2, 220); John Anderson, Sr., DB (6-0, 180); Tyrin Taylor, Sr., DB (6-1, 178); Cole Maynard, Sr., K/P (6-0, 170); Isaiah Brown-Murray, Jr., DB (5-10, 175).

Key Returnees: John Stanula, Sr., LB (6-3, 220); Darryl Taylor (Jr.), WR (5-10, 165); Prestin Hawkins, Jr., OL (6-6, 305); Jason Chambers, Jr., DB (6-0, 185); Ethan Johnson, Jr., DB (6-0, 180); Tad Hudson, So., QB (6-3, 210).

Key Newcomers: Brayln Oliver, Sr., Safety (6-2, 195); Jesiah Davis, Sr., WR (6-2, 180, Providence Day transfer); Kaci Seegars, Sr.., LB (6-2, 210, Ardrey Kell transfer); Myles Jones, Sr. (6-2, 220, Myers Park transfer); Derek Spearman, Sr, DB (6-3, 190)

Outlook: Hough has proved it can compete with past state champions Vance and Mallard Creek in North Carolina’s No. 1 conference, going 30-12 in the past three years with a trip to the 4AA state semifinals (2017) and quarterfinals (2018). This year, the Huskies are loaded with RB Evan Pryor (Ohio State) leading an offense that also features 6-foot-4, 285-pound offensive lineman Timmy Artis Jr. and senior receivers Tyler Hoff and Coen Sutton. Providence Day transfer Jesiah Davis adds depth to an experienced receiving corps for Division I QB Tad Hudson.

The Hough defense should also be stout with seniors Isaac Walker and junior Curtis Neal up front and a trio of seniors — Sean Brown, Mario Love and Tyrin Taylor — in the secondary. DB Derek Spearman also returns. He has offers from schools like Nebraska, Miami, Brown and Yale. Senior kicker, Cole Maynard, also gives the team a rare special team’s weapon. Hough will also benefit from transfers including Davis (University of Virginia commit) and linebacker Kaci Seegars (Texas A&M).

NO. 2 VANCE COUGARS

Head Coach: Glenwood Ferebee (2nd year).

2019 Record: 13-2

Conference: I-Meck 4A Conference/4AA.

Returning Starters: 13

Returning Lettermen: 20

Key Returning Starters: Power Echols, Sr., LB (6-1, 205); Austin Grier, Sr., QB (6-0, 195); Joseph Morris, Sr., RB (5-9, 170); Jonathan Cannon, Sr., OL/DL (6-5, 240); Daylan Smothers, Sr., RB (5-10, 185); Kevin Concepcion, So., WR (5-11, 170).

Key Returnees: Nathaniel Spindle, Sr., DB (6-0, 180); Jalen Andrews, Sr., RB/LB (5-11, 205); Jalen Swindell, Jr., OL/DT (6-3, 270).

Key Newcomers: Songa Yates, Sr., WR (5-10, 170); Avarion Cole, Sr., DB (6-1, 200); Isiah Williams, Jr., DT (6-0, 260); Jyilek Harrington (5-11, 225, Myers Park transfer)

Outlook: Vance has been one of the most consistent winners in the state over the past four years, going 51-10. But last year, the Cougars made a magical playoff run, winning five straight road games to earn the 4AA state championship. Vance is eager to prove itself again and has plenty of experience with 13 starters returning. All-State linebacker and University of North Carolina commit Power Echols is back to lead a suffocating Cougars’ defense that allowed only nine points per game last year. LB Jyilek Harrington, a Myers Park transfer, was a top defensive player on a national power.

Meanwhile, senior quarterback Austin Grier (3,435 yards passing, 19 touchdowns, 721 yards rushing) is back to spark the offense with senior running back Joseph Morris (978 yards rushing, nine touchdowns) and classmate Jonathan Cannon paving the way for the offensive line. Vance will be tested early with a game against coach Tom Knotts and nationally ranked Dutch Fork (S.C.) and at Weddington in the first month. The Cougars have the weapons to win the I-Meck 4A conference and repeat as state champions.

NO. 3 WEDDINGTON WARRIORS

Head Coach: Andy Capone (3rd Year).

2019 Record: 16-0

Conference: Southern Carolinas 3A

Returning Starters: 15 (9 offense; 6 defense).

Returning Lettermen: 30

Key Returning Starters: Will Shipley, Sr., RB (5-11, 200); Bryson Parker, Sr., DB (5-10, 185); Jalen Newman, Sr., DB (6-0, 180); Dante Casciola, Sr., QB (6-1, 180); Austin Pronk, Sr., OL/DL (6-4, 290); Will Owens, Sr., OL/DL (6-2, 230); Alex McLaughlin, Sr., OL/DL (5-10, 230); Nick Aderholt, Sr., OL/DL (5-11, 250); Joe Zovistoski, Sr., DE/LB (6-2, 205); Cole Wiseman, Sr., DE/LB (6-0, 205).

Key Returnees: Kyle Parsons, Jr., RB/DB (6-0, 190); Kambridge Tuttle, Sr., WR/DB (5-10, 170); Trey Gordon, Sr. RB (5-9, 165); Evan Schwartz, Sr., LB (6-0, 205).

Key Newcomers: N/A.

Outlook: The two-time 3AA state champions will be loaded once again with reigning N.C. Gatorade Player of the Year and senior running back Will Shipley (Clemson commit) leading the way for a squad returning 15 starters. Weddington is 31-1 in the past two years, but will be tested with Ardrey Kell, Charlotte Catholic and Vance on the schedule. But with Shipley (2,066 yards rushing, 31 touchdowns last year) senior QB Dante Casciola and a veteran offensive line (four seniors) to go with an opportunistic defense led by senior edge rushers Joe Zovistoski (9.5 sacks) and Cole Wiseman (8.5 sacks), Weddington has all the weapons to win its third straight 3AA state title.

NO. 4 MYERS PARK MUSTANGS

Head Coach: Scott Chadwick (7th year at Myers Park).

2019 Record: 12-1

Conference: Southwestern 4A

Returning Starters: 10 (6 offense; 4 defense).

Returning Lettermen: 30

Key Returning Starters: Drake Maye, Sr., QB (6-5, 210); Matthew Dennis, Sr., K (5-11, 170); Tahj El, Sr., DB (6-2, 185); Jordan Bly, Sr., WR (5-11, 175); KaDeron Redfearn, Sr., RB (5-10, 185); Bo Crutcher, Jr., OL (6-2, 290); Cameron Nichols, Jr., OL (6-2, 310); Andrew Bookeman, Sr., DL (5-11, 265); Jimmy Simpson, Sr., DL (6-2, 290); Jordan Tinsley, Jr., DL (6-0, 290); Jacob Newman, Jr., RB/WR (5-11, 190).

Key Returnees: Keyaan Abdul Rahim, So., LB (6-0, 210).

Key Newcomers: Omari Phillyaw, Jr., DB (5-10, 170)

Outlook: Myers Park has established itself as one of the top programs in the state, going 48-7 in the past four years. The Mustangs return 10 starters from a team whose only loss came in a 35-32 heartbreaker at Richmond Senior in the 4AA state quarterfinals. This year, Myers Park senior quarterback Drake Maye (University of North Carolina commit) returns to direct an offense that averaged 50 points per game last year. Maye, who passed for 3,512 yards and 50 touchdowns last year, has plenty of weapons with senior wide receiver Jordan Bly (seven touchdown catches) and running backs Jacob Newman, and KaDeron Redfearn to go with an experienced offensive line.

Myers Park, which allowed 10 points per game a year ago, will have to reload a bit on defense after losing some talent to graduation and transfer, but has playmakers on the defensive line in Andrew Bookman, Jimmy Simpson and Jordan Tinsley as well as senior defensive back Tahj El returning. Myers Park has been close to competing for a 4AA state title in each of the past three years, which gives Maye and company plenty of motivation to prove they can win it all in 2020. Myers Park will figure out just how good it is quickly with games with Mallard Creek, South Pointe (S.C.) and Hough in the first month of the season.

NO. 5 CHARLOTTE CATHOLIC COUGARS

Head Coach: Mike Brodowicz (7th year).

2019 Record: 12-3

Key Returnees: Will Detmer, Sr., LB (6-0, 205).

Key Newcomers: Clint Barlow, So., OT (6-4, 270); Gavin Hood, So., OT (6-0, 260); Jason Jeffiers, Jr., RB/WR (6-3, 180).

Outlook: Tradition never graduates for a Charlotte Catholic team that is used to winning big, averaging 14 wins per season in the past six years. The three-time defending 3A state champions will ride their vaunted rushing attack led by senior Paul Neel (1,967 yards rushing last year) and junior Jimmy Brewer (985 yards rushing). Meanwhile, senior linebacker, Liam Barbee (183 tackles last year), and senior defensive end Connor Dougherty (109 tackles) return to lead a suffocating defense. The players change, but the goal to win another state title (and a four-peat) remains the same every year at Catholic.

NO. 6 RICHMOND SENIOR RAIDERS

Head Coach: Bryan Till (4th year at Richmond Senior; 10th year overall).

Tillman, Sr., LB (6-0, 212); Kaleel Brown-Palmer, Sr., DT (5-10, 250); J.D. Lampley, Jr., DT (6-3, 270); Jaleak Gates, Jr., OLB/ATH (6-2, 180); Trevor Moss, Sr., K (6-2, 175).

Key Returnees: Jaron Coleman, Sr., RB (5-8, 175); Caleb Wilson, Sr., OL (6-0, 260); Jahmeek Harden, Sr., LB (6-0, 225); Derrick Everette, Sr., (6-2, 225).

Key Newcomers: Jamari Broady, Jr., CB (5-10, 150); Jaiden Covington, Jr., OL (6-3, 290); Jefferey Linton, So., OL (6-4, 310).

Outlook: Richmond Senior returns 12 starters (including seven on offense) from a team that went 13-1, with its only loss coming to eventual state champion Vance in the 4AA state semifinals. The Raiders, who averaged 41 points per game last year, will boast another potent offense with senior quarterback and UNC commit Caleb Hood (2,175 yards passing, 21 touchdowns, 976 yards rushing, 16 touchdowns runs) returning. He directs a unit that has an array of weapons, from senior running back Jaron Coleman (740 yards rushing) to a trio of senior wide receivers in Jakolbe Baldwin (687 yards receiving, eight touchdowns), Tremel Jones (31 catches for 485 yards) and Dalton Stroman (716 yards receiving, nine touchdowns). The Richmond defense should also be strong with senior All-State linebacker C.J. Tillman (105 tackles, 21 tackles for loss) making plays all over the field.

Kings Mountain returns senior QB Ethan Reid (2,840 yards passing and 44 touchdowns last year) and wide receiver Kobe Paysour (North Carolina commit, 1,138 yards receving, 16 touchdowns last year). Outlook: A new era begins at Mallard Creek with head coach Kennedy Tinsley (former Southeast Guilford head coach). Tinsley will follow three-time state champion Mike Palmieri, who averaged 13 wins per season over the past decade. Despite only having four starters back, expectations will be high for the Mavericks, who will need big play from seniors like wide receivers Damonte Furman, Coleman Jeffcoat and Elijah Metcalf (64 catches for 1,125 yards and 16 touchdowns last year) as well as running back P.J. Those include seniors Joshua Johnson (953 total yards last year) and Quentin McCall and sophomore Brooks Stankavage (608 total yards, nine touchdowns as a freshman) on offense. Meanwhile, the Knights’ defense will be stout with senior linebackers Steven Bauer (led team in tackles last two years) and Travis Collins leading the unit.

Outlook: The Wonders have been consistent winners, averaging nine wins per season over the past five years. This year, with 14 starters back, Brown wants to chase a ring. Junior quarterback Cam Kromah (1,685 yards, 14 touchdown passes last year), senior running back, Todd Kennedy, Jr. (531 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns) and senior wideout Isaiah Black (548 yards receiving) will power an offense on the verge of big things. Outlook: Statesville’s perfect season came to screeching halt in a second-round loss to Kings Mountain. This year, the core of that team returns with plenty of motivation. Senior quarterback Nebayne Moore (2,852 yards passing, 24 touchdowns), running back Chavion Smith (531 yards rushing, nine touchdowns), and wide receiver Jasaiah Gathings (60 catches for 1,160 yards and 14 touchdowns) are back to lead an offense that averaged 41 points per game. Outlook: After a decade of losing records, Bazzle has guided North Lincoln to a 22-6 record in the past two years, including a program-best 12-2 in 2019. This season, senior quarterback Jack Carter, junior running back Ty Williams (1,356 yards rushing, 22 touchdowns last year) and senior wideout Seth Whitley should form the nucleus of a strong offense. On defense, senior defensive tackle Travali Price (84 tackles, 21 tackles for loss) is a five-star recruit. He’ll pair with linebacker Ty Castro (86 tackles), defensive backs Craig Rathbone (59 tackles, six interceptions) and Daniel Carter (89 tackles, four interceptions) to lead a defense that allowed just 11 points per game last season.
