ARDREY KELL
Head Coach: Greg Jachym (2nd year).
2019 Record: 11-2
Conference: SoMeck 7
Returning Starters: 13
Returning Lettermen: 30
Key Returning Starters: Steven Bauer, Sr., LB (6-0, 195); Joshua Johnson, Sr., WR/DB (6-1, 190); Quentin McCall, Sr., WR/DB (6-4, 185); Brooks Stankavage, So., RB/DB (5-11, 180); Jamier Moten, Jr., RB/DB (5-8, 150); Jackson Price, Sr., K/P (6-2, 180); Justin Burturff, Sr., OL (6-3, 210); Griffin O’Brien, Sr., OL/DL (6-1, 265); Jaxen Ariciso, Sr., DB (5-11, 180); Travis Collins, Sr., LB (5-11, 190);
Key Returnees: N/A.
Key Newcomers: Jack Curtis, Jr., QB (6-2, 175).
Outlook: Ardrey Kell enjoyed its best season in school history last year, going 11-2 in year one under Coach Greg Jachym. This year, the Knights have the experience (13 starters back) to stay on top of the SoMeck7 conference. Ardrey Kell will need playmakers like seniors Joshua Johnson (953 total yards last year) and Quentin McCall, and sophomore Brooks Stankavage (608 total yards, nine touchdowns as a freshman) on offense. Meanwhile, the Knights’ defense will be stout with senior linebackers Steven Bauer (led team in tackles last two years) and Travis Collins leading the unit.
BERRY
Head Coach: Andrew Howard (5th year).
2019 Record: 2-9
Conference: SoMeck 7
Returning Starters: 15
Returning Lettermen: 20
Key Returning Starters: Antoine Bell, Jr., WR (6-3, 205); Tyree Copeland, Sr., Center (OL) (6-0, 235); Adreyan Kirkpatrick, Sr., WR (6-1, 185); Michael Dulin, Sr., DB (6-1, 185); Khaliq Ameer-Bey, Jr., LB (6-0, 215); Bredan McMoore, Jr., LB (6-0, 220); Cam’ron Butts, Sr., DB (5-10, 170); K’lijah Jackson-Melton, Sr., DB (6-0, 180); Jaitonn McDonald, Sr., DB (6-1, 185); Hakim Roberts, Sr., DL (6-0, 255); John Lutz, Sr., DL (6-0, 250); Israel McCray, Sr., DB (6-0, 180); Brandon Kauffna, Jr., K (5-10, 165); Kenly Hemingway, Jr., DB (5-10, 150).
Key Returnees: Christian MacDonald, Jr., WR (6-2, 155); Kory Norwood, Jr., DL (6-1, 205); Micah Dargins, Sr., WR (5-9, 145); Desmond Mack, Sr., RB (6-0, 160); Justin Summers, Sr., RB (5-11, 170).
Key Newcomers: Jalil Quick, Jr., QB (6-0, 150); Christian Haile, Jr., WR/DB (5-10, 145); Sequan Osborne, So., WR (6-1, 140); Tomar Bivens, So., WR/RB (5-11, 135); Desmond Clawson, Jr., DB/RB (6-1, 145).
Outlook: Berry has suffered through the last four seasons going 4-40. But the Cardinals have some reasons to believe they can improve this year with 15 starters back. Berry will need senior wide receivers Khaliq Ameer-Bey, Adreyan Kirkpatrick and junior Antoine Bell to help recharge an offense that averaged only 14 points per game last year. The Cardinals’ defense will be more experienced with senior defensive backs Cam’ron Butts, Michael Dulin and K’lijah Jackson-Melton leading the unit. Berry has the experience to make a move in the SoMeck 7 conference, but will have to prove it in a balanced league that will provide a stern test.
BUTLER
Head Coach: Brian Hales (11th year).
2019 Record: 8-4
Conference: Southwestern 4A
Returning Starters: 11

Starks, Sr., LB (5-10, 170).
Key Returnees: Korey Hunter, Sr., DB (5-11, 190); Darius Bobo, Jr., WR (6-1, 170); Elijah L
Key Newcomers: Isaiah Trent, Sr., WR (6-1, 200); Chris James, Sr., OL/DL (5-10, 250); Jake Snapp, Sr., ATH (6-0, 185).
Outlook: Butler has averaged 11 wins per season in Hales’ decade long tenure, establishing itself as the class of the Southwestern 4A conference and one of the most consistent winners in the state. Last year, the Bulldogs finished second to Myers Park in league play. This season, Butler will look to get back on top with senior quarterback Parish Metzger (1,089 yards passing last year); versatile playmakers in Jake Snapp (Providence transfer) and Ty Moore leading the way behind senior tackle Leo Arredondo. Meanwhile, junior defensive tackle Bryce Dixon (89 tackles, 16 tackles for loss last year) and senior linebackers Isaiah Lawson (59 tackles) and A.J. Starks (58 tackles, eight sacks) will be the core of a strong Butler defense.
CHARLOTTE CATHOLIC
Head Coach: Mike Brodowicz (7th year).
2019 Record: 12-3
Conference: Southern Carolinas Conference 3A
Returning Starters: 9
Returning Lettermen: 26
Key Returning Starters: Paul Neel, Sr., RB (5-10, 185); Liam Barbee, Sr., LB (6-1, 220); Connor Dougherty, Sr., DE (6-3, 220); Kevin Dumser, Sr., FS (6-1, 170); Charlie Woeste, Sr., CB (6-0, 175); Ariel Rodriguez, Jr., DT (6-0, 270); Jimmy Brewer, Jr., RB (6-0, 215).

Key Newcomers: Clint Barlow, So., OT (6-4, 270); Gavin Hood, So., OT (6-0, 260); Jason Jeffiers, Jr., RB/WR (6-3, 180).
Outlook: Tradition never graduates for a Charlotte Catholic team that is used to winning big, averaging 14 wins per season in the last six years. The three-time defending 3A state champions will ride its vaunted rushing attack with seniors Paul Neel (1,967 yards rushing last year) and Jimmy Brewer (985 yards rushing) carrying the load for the offense. Meanwhile, seniors linebacker Liam Barbee (183 tackles last year) and defensive end Connor Dougherty (109 tackles) return to lead a suffocating defense.
CHRIST THE KING
Head Coach: Daniel Rhodes (2nd year).
2019 Record: 0-10
Conference: South Piedmont 1A
Returning Starters: 8
Returning Lettermen: 11
Key Returning Starters: Nicholas Wilson, Jr., QB (6-3, 170); Joshua Angell, Sr., QB/WR/DB (6-0, 175); Ryan Zimmerman, Jr., RB/FB/LB (5-10, 190); Fausto Arias, So., DB/RB (5-11, 185); Elijah Ford, So., LB (5-10, 165); Ben Pomerance, Sr., LB/DL/OL (6-0, 215); Noah Angell, Sr. OL/DL (6-1, 250); Will Creter, So., OL/DL (6-4, 225).
Key Returnees: Tommy Ellington, So., WR/DB (5-10, 150).
Key Newcomers: Plaxico Brown, Jr., DB/LB (6-3, 180).
Outlook: Christ the King has struggled as a varsity program with only three wins in their first three seasons, including an 0-10 record last year in their first year as a member of the NCHSAA. This year, the Crusaders have to score more points (only 64 last season) and will look to junior quarterback Nicholas Wilson and athletes like senior Joshua Angell and junior Ryan Zimmerman to try to accomplish that task. If Christ the King can get back in win column with a victory or two that would be a big step in right direction for the entire program.
EAST MECKLENBURG
Head Coach: Robert Forshee (3rd year).
2019 Record: 1-10
Conference: Southwestern 4A
Returning Starters: 18
Returning Lettermen: 20
Key Returning Starters: Cory Hoke, Sr., QB (6-0, 180); D.J. Austin, Sr., WR/DB (6-0, 180); Don Woods, Sr., DB (6-0, 175); Lee Campbell, Sr., DB/RB (6-0, 180); Chris Brown, So., RB/DB (5-8, 165); Kalihl Hoke, So., OL/DL (6-0, 250); B.J. Perry, Jr., OL/DL (5-9, 215); David Gibbs, Sr., OL/DL (5-9, 250); Brock Fowler, Jr., TE/DE (6-4, 240); Jackson Edwards, Sr., RB/LB (5-9, 180); Xzayvion Dorn, Sr., LB (6-1, 185); Jarred Townsend, Sr., WR/DB (6-0, 185); Chris Dickey, Sr., OL/DL (5-11, 195).
Key Returnees: Carl Trapp, Jr., OL/DL (5-8, 190); Parker Storey, So., TE/DE (6-2, 180); Collin McClure, Jr., OL/LB (5-10, 170); Andrew Tobin, OL/DL (6-1, 220).
Key Newcomers: Curtis Davis, WR/DB (6-1, 215); Trevion Reed, OL/DL/RB (6-1, 210); Nate Pellin, OL/DL (6-0, 200); Kylan Koonce, QB/TE/DE (6-2, 210).
Outlook: East Mecklenburg is 2-19 in the last two years, going winless in Southwestern 4A conference play. This year, the Eagles have reasons to be optimistic with 18 starters returning. The East Mecklenburg offense should be more productive with seniors, including quarterback Corey Hoke and wide receiver D.J. Austin with the ball in their hands most often. The Eagles’ defense is also an experienced group with senior defensive backs Lee Campbell (81 tackles) and Don Woods (44 tackles, three interceptions) leading the unit.
GARINGER
Head Coach: Greg Fowler (1st year).
2019 Record: 1-10
Conference: Southwestern 4A
Returning Starters: 9 (4 offense; 5 defense).
Returning Lettermen: 23
Key Returning Starters: Xzavius Staten, Sr., Slot/DB (6-0, 180); Lavalton McRae, Jr., OL/DL (6-4, 275); Elias Bethea, Sr., QB (5-10 175); Peter Guest, Jr., RB/LB/Slot (6-2, 210); Diweley Kambou, Sr., DL (6-0, 235); William Smith, Jr., OL/DL (5-11, 235); Antwan Jones, So., S/ATH (6-0, 190); Corey Hudson, Sr., LB/Slot/SS (5-11, 170).
Key Returnees: Cameron Black, Sr., RB/LB (5-11, 220); TaSean Truesdale, Sr., WR/DB (5-8, 155); Kendaris Bethea, Jr., Slot/DB (5-7, 155).
Key Newcomers: Josephn Akpome, So., OLB (6-0, 190); Roderick Davis, So., RB/DB (5-6, 145).
Outlook: Greg Fowler becomes the 10th, Garinger head coach in the last 20 years, which makes it difficult to gain continuity. But Fowler believes he can help a program that 5-39 in the last four years. The Wildcats will need seniors in quarterback, Elias Bethea, running back/wide receiver, Xzavius Staten, and offensive lineman, Lavalton McRae, to step into bigger roles and help Garinger put more points on the board if they are going to win games. If Garinger can climb out of the bottom of the Southwestern 4A conference and get in the win column a few times or more, that would be a huge step in the right direction for a program that needs it.
HARDING
Head Coach: Van Smith (3rd year).
2019 Record: 6-5
Conference: SoMeck 7
Returning Starters: 7
Returning Lettermen: 18
Key Returning Starters: Tylon Dunlap, Sr., DE (6-0, 250); Justin Blue, Sr., OL (6-3, 330).
Key Returnees: N/A.
Key Newcomers: Jaylen Beckham, Sr., ATH (6-3, 205); Logan Blair, Jr., OLB (6-4, 210).
Outlook: Harding was much improved in its first full season under coach Smith, going from 2-9 in 2018 to 6-5. This season, the Rams have a chance to be just as good with senior defensive end Tylon Dunlap (106 tackles, 19 sacks, 11-plus Division I offers) and junior linebacker Logan Blair (already has Division I interest) wrecking opposing teams backfields for the defense. Then, 6-foot-3, 330-pound offensive lineman Justin Blue returns to the lead the Rams’ offense.
HOPEWELL
Head Coach: Jamelle Byrd (3rd year).
2019 Record: 4-7
Conference: I-Meck 4A
Returning Starters: 19
Returning Lettermen: 23
Key Returning Starters: Julian Gray, Sr., WR (6-0, 185); Fred Bates, Sr., DB (5-11, 175); Jacob Polight, Sr., WR (6-3, 185); A.J. Simpkins, Sr., QB (6-2, 210); Chris Williams, Sr., LB (6-2, 235); Jabari Brown, Sr., DB (5-10, 185); D.J. Maultsby, Sr., RB/WR (6-0, 195).
Key Returnees: Matt Flanders, Jr., TE/HB (6-3, 235); Damian West, Jr., WR (5-10, 175).
Key Newcomers: N/A.
Outlook: After going 2-42 in the previous four years, Hopewell took a big step forward going 4-7 last year. This year, the Titans should be even better as they return 19 starters. Hopewell’s offense should again be productive with senior quarterback A.J. Simpkins, (2,206 yards passing, 16 touchdowns) spreading the ball around to wide receivers Julian Gray (57 catches for 1,157 yards and nine touchdowns), D.J. Maultsby (24 receptions) and Jacob Polight (486 yards receiving). The Titans’ defense has a wealth of experience led by senior defensive backs Fred Bates (76 tackles, three interceptions) and Jabari Brown (two interceptions) as well as senior linebacker Chris Williams (88 tackles, five sacks). Hopewell’s last winning season came a decade ago (2010). This year, the Titans look to end that streak, get above .500 and return to the playoffs for the first time since 2013.
HOUGH
Head Coach: Matthew Jenkins (4th year).
2019 Record: 8-5
Conference: I-Meck 4A
Returning Starters: 17
Returning Lettermen: 47
Key Returning Starters: Evan Pryor, Sr., RB (5-10, 190); Timmy Artis (Jr.), Sr., OL (6-4, 285); Greyson Hutchins, Sr., WR (5-10, 185); Coen Sutton, Sr., WR (6-2, 200); Tyler Hoff, Sr., WR (5-10, 185); Mario Love, Sr., DB (5-10, 180); Sean Brown, Sr., DB (6-1, 192); Curtis Neal, Jr., DL (6-2, 287); Isaac Walker, Sr., OLB/DE (6-3, 225); Julian Rawlins, Sr., DE (6-2, 220); John Anderson, Sr., DB (6-0, 180); Tyrin Taylor, Sr., DB (6-1, 178); Cole Maynard, Sr., K/P (6-0, 170); Isaiah Brown-Murray, Jr., DB (5-10, 175).
Key Returnees: John Stanula, Sr., LB (6-3, 220); Darryl Taylor (Jr.), WR (5-10, 165); Prestin Hawkins, Jr., OL (6-6, 305); Jason Chambers, Jr., DB (6-0, 185); Ethan Johnson, Jr., DB (6-0, 180); Tad Hudson, So., QB (6-3, 210).
Key Newcomers: Brayln Oliver, Sr., Safety (6-2, 195); Jessiah Davis, Sr., WR (6-2, 180) (Providence Day transfer); Kaci Seegars, Sr.., LB (6-2, 210) (Ardrey Kell transfer).
Outlook: Hough has proved it can hang in one of the state’s best conferences (I-Meck 4A) with the likes of Mallard Creek and Vance, going 30-12 in the last three years with a trip to the 4AA state semifinals (2017) and quarterfinals (2018). This year the Huskies are loaded with Ohio State commit Evan Pryor back lead an offense that also features 6-foot-4, 285-pound offensive lineman Timmy Artis, and senior wideouts Tyler Hoff and Coen Sutton. The Hough defense should also be stout with seniors Isaac Walker and junior Curtis Neal up front and the trio of seniors, Sean Brown, Mario Love and Tyrin Taylor, in the secondary. Senior kicker, Cole Maynard, also gives them a rare special teams’ weapon. Hough will also benefit from transfers, including wide receiver Jessiah Davis (Providence Day, University of Virginia commit) and linebacker Kaci Seegars (Ardrey Kell).
INDEPENDENCE
Head Coach: Mike Natoli (4th year).
2019 Record: 6-6
Conference: Southwestern 4A Conference/4AA.
Returning Starters: 8
Returning Lettermen: 20
Key Returning Starters: Tyson Clawson, Sr., DE (6-1, 220); Davion Nelson, Sr., RB (5-11, 227); Jeremy Phillips, Sr., LB (5-10, 175); Kenan Silas, Sr., WR (6-4, 186); Ronnell Garrett, Sr., LB (5-10, 193); Arnold Taylor, Sr., QB (6-1, 200); Tedrick Spicer, Sr., DB (5-9, 153); Elijah Puranda, Sr., DB (5-8, 159).
Key Returnees: Khalil Morrison, Jr., WR/DB (5-10, 160).
Key Newcomers: N/A.
Outlook: Independence has struggled of late with 14 wins in the last three years. But the Patriots’ 6-6 record last year was encouraging. Independence returns the core of that team with seniors quarterback Arnold Taylor (1,394 yards passing, 12 touchdowns), running back Davion Nelson (1,456 yards rushing, 14 touchdowns) back to power the offense. The Patriots’ defense has multiple playmakers, including senior defensive end Tyson Clawson (85 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, 10 sacks), linebackers Ronnell Garrett (48 tackles, 10 tackles for loss) and Jeremy Phillips (59 tackles) and defensive back Elijah Puranda (42 tackles). Independence has improved their record in each of Natoli’s seasons, and have a good chance to do that again in 2020
LAKE NORMAN CHARTER
Head Coach: Bob McKay (2nd year).
2019 Record: 1-10
Conference: South Fork 2A
Returning Starters: 11
Returning Lettermen:4
Key Returning Starters: Jeff Womack, Sr., QB (6-2, 180); Jared Ryan, Sr., WR/DB (6-3, 160); Andrew Rinehardt, Sr., WR/DE (6-4, 195); Sam Libbey, Sr., TE/DE (6-4, 200).
Key Returnees: Martin Hare, So., OL/DL (6-2, 225).
Key Newcomers: N/A.
Outlook: Lake Norman Charter has struggled in the past three years, going 6-27 overall, with no wins in South Fork 2A conference play in that same span. But Coach Bob McKay returns 11 starters the Knights should be improved. The Lake Norman Charter offense is led by senior quarterback, Jeff Womack, who passed for 1,562 yards and 13 touchdowns last season. Meanwhile, the Knights’ defense will depend on junior defensive back, Jared Ryan (three interceptions) and senior defensive end, Sam Libbey (three sacks). Lake Norman Charter has a tough task in the South Fork 2A conference, but getting a win or two in league play would be a step in the right direction in 2020.
MALLARD CREEK
Head Coach: Kennedy Tinsley (1st year).
2019 Record: 10-1
Conference: I-Meck 4A
Returning Starters: 4
Returning Lettermen: 28
Key Returning Starters: Elijah Metcalf, Sr., WR (5-9, 175); P.J. Hinton, Sr., RB (5-9, 180); Damonte Furman, Sr., WR (5-9, 170); Coleman Jeffcoat, Sr., WR/LB (6-4, 210).
Key Returnees: Jared Crawl-bey, Sr., OL/DL (6-5, 240); Kaleb Washington, Sr., WR/DB (6-1, 190); Jonathan Slaughter, Sr., DL/LB (6-0, 230).
Key Newcomers: N/A.
Outlook: A new era begins at Mallard Creek with head coach Kennedy Tinsley (former Southeast Guilford head coach) taking on the unenviable task of following Mike Palmieri, who averaged 13 wins per season over the last decade. Only four starters return but there’s plenty of talent in the junior class. While younger players mature, Mallard Creek will need senior playmakers like wide receivers Damonte Furman, Coleman Jeffcoat and Elijah Metcalf (64 catches for 1,125 yards and 16 touchdowns last year) and running back, P.J. Hinton to play well, especially early.
MYERS PARK
Head Coach: Scott Chadwick (7th year).
2019 Record: 12-1
Conference: Southwestern 4A
Returning Starters: 10 (6 offense; 4 defense).
Returning Lettermen: 30
Key Returning Starters: Drake Maye, Sr., QB (6-5, 210); Matthew Dennis, Sr., K (5-11, 170); Tahj El, Sr., DB (6-2, 185); Jordan Bly, Sr., WR (5-11, 175); KaDeron Redfearn, Sr., RB (5-10, 185); Bo Crutcher, Jr., OL (6-2, 290); Cameron Nichols, Jr., OL (6-2, 310); Andrew Bookeman, Sr., DL (5-11, 265); Jimmy Simpson, Sr., DL (6-2, 290); Jordan Tinsley, Jr., DL (6-0, 290); Jacob Newman, Jr., RB/WR (5-11, 175).
Key Returnees: Keyaan Abdul Rahim, So., LB (6-0, 210).
Key Newcomers: Omari Phillyaw, Jr., DB (5-10, 170).
Outlook: Myers Park has established itself as one of the top programs in the state, going 48-7 in the last four years. The Mustangs return three starters from a team whose only loss came in a 35-32 heartbreaker at Richmond Senior in the 4AA state quarterfinals. This year, Myers Park senior quarterback, Drake Maye (University of North Carolina commit, one of the top rated quarterbacks in the country) returns to direct an offense that averaged 50 points per game last year. Maye, who passed for 3,512 yards and 50 touchdowns last year, has plenty of weapons with senior wide receiver, Jordan Bly (seven touchdown catches) and running backs in junior, Jacob Newman, and senior, KaDeron Redfearn to go with an experienced offensive line. The Myers Park, which allowed 10 points per game a year ago, will have to reload a bit but has playmakers on the defensive line in Andrew Bookman, Jimmy Simpson and Jordan Tinsley as well as senior defensive back, Tahj El, to lead the unit. Myers Park has been close to competing for a 4AA state title in each of the past three years, which gives Maye and company plenty of motivation to prove they can win it all in 2020. Myers Park will figure out just how good they are quickly with games with Mallard Creek, South Pointe (SC) and Hough in the first month of the season.
NORTH MECKLENBURG
Head Coach: Damon McKee (1st year).

Key Newcomers: N/A.
Outlook: North Mecklenburg averaged 15 points per game in 2019. This year, new coach Damon McKee and the Vikings look to improve. North Mecklenburg will need more production from junior quarterback John Geter IV and senior running back Jordan Hanson if the offense is going to put more points on the board. The Vikings’ defense will also have to better with senior defensive end Rey’noi Summersett and linebacker Clark Brown leading the group. North Mecklenburg has nowhere to go but up this season, but with a new head coach in a tough league with have to prove they can get back in the win column to get things going back in the right direction.

Key Returnees: Xion Kilbourn, Jr., QB (6-3, 220).
Key Newcomers: Kwaoko Appiah, LB; Dylon Smoot, DE; Kesean Watson WR/DB.
Outlook: The Trojans were much improved in year one of coach Thompson’s career, going 8-4, their first winning season since 2013. Olympic returns 13 starters led by senior running back, reigning SoMeck7 conference player of the year, Cameron Smith (1,952 yards, nine touchdowns), junior quarterback Sean Bowles (1,309 yards passing) on offense. Meanwhile, senior defensive end Kai Russell (51 tackles, seven sacks) will anchor a defense on a team ready to challenge for the SoMeck7 conference title. Olympic has the game-changing players to be a dangerous playoff matchup.

Key Returnees: Trevor Reams, Sr., DL/LB (6-0, 220); Nathan Haijdo, Jr., DB/LB (6-0, 180).
Key Newcomers: N/A.
Outlook: Providence has been up and down in recent years, going 21-26. This year, the Panthers will benefit from a veteran team with 14 starters back. The Providence offense has plenty of firepower with seniors, including quarterback Holland Stallings, running back Jamar Price (8.8 yards per carry last year) and 6-foot-5, 290-pound tackle Jalen Brooks. The Panthers’ defense also has multiple playmakers with senior defensive end, Mason Adkins (13 sacks), defensive back Darren Rice (120 tackles, 32 tackles for loss, four sacks, two interceptions) and junior Dewayne Gissendanner (four interceptions). Providence also has the luxury of boasting one of the nation’s best kicker in Eddie Czaplicki, who can change a game with his leg.

Key Returnees: Khalil Archie, Jr., QB (5-11, 165); Christian Rudisell, Sr., DB (6-0, 180); Kendall Stanley, Jr., OL (6-5, 290).
Key Newcomers: N/A.
Outlook: Rocky River has just eight wins the last three years. This season, Rocky River should be improved with 12 starters back led by a massive offensive line that features 6-foot-4, 320-pound Korion Sharpe, and 6-foot-3 297-pound Gabriel Palacios. They will try to make room for senior playmakers like running back Kalib Jennings (852 yards rushing) and receiver Antjuan Collins (582 yards receiving, five touchdowns). The Rocky River defense will have to be more stingy with senior all-conference defensive back Jevon McIver and junior middle linebacker Goodness Oboemena (57 tackles) directing the unit. Rocky River’s last winning season came in 2014, and so the goal is to get back above .500 and into the postseason.
SOUTH MECKLENBURG
Head Coach: Joe Evans (2nd year).
2019 Record: 0-11
Conference: SoMeck 7

Returning Lettermen: 28
Key Returning Starters: Bryson Nesbit, Sr., TE (6-6, 220); Matthew Reddick, Jr., MLB (6-2, 215); Landon Eagler, Jr., OL (6-4, 275); Te’Khi Moss, Jr., DB (6-0, 180); Panos Burlos, Jr., RB/LB (5-11, 185); Taron Williams, Jr., OL (6-7, 295); Kewan Braziel, Sr., QB (5-10, 165); Josh Streu, Jr., DL (6-2, 200); Rob Defenbaugh, Sr., OL (6-4, 255); Jack Phillips, Jr., OL (6-2, 210); Jalen Alexander, Jr., DL (6-5, 235); Matts Flicking, Jr., OL/DL (6-0, 220); Fernando Lopez, Sr., HB (5-10, 210); Chris Gates, Sr., OL/DL (6-0, 250); Slade Roy, Sr., LS/TE (6-0, 200).
Key Returnees: N/A.
Key Newcomers: Benji Tidwell, So., LB (5-11, 160); Elijah Moye, So., WR (5-10, 150); Henry Bowen, Jr., RB (5-8, 190).
Outlook: South Mecklenburg has struggled of late with only five wins in last three seasons combined, including an 0-11 record last year, where they tallied only 95 points all season. But Evans has reasons to believe things will get better with 18 starters returning. The Sabres’ offense will have to be more productive with senior tight end Bryson Nesbit, junior running back Panos Burlos and all-conference lineman Landon Eagler leading the unit. The South Mecklenburg defense should also be improved as all-conference juniors -- middle linebacker Matthew Reddick and defensive back Te’Khi Moss -- headlining an experienced group.

Outlook: Vance has been one of the most consistent winners in the state over the last four years going 51-10 in the same span. But last year, the Cougars made a magical playoff run winning five straight road games to earn their first 4AA state championship. Vance is eager to prove themselves again and have plenty of experience with 13 starters returning. All-state linebacker and University of North Carolina commit Power Echols is back to lead a Cougars’ defense that allowed only nine points per game last year. Meanwhile, senior quarterback Austin Grier (3,435 yards passing, 19 touchdowns, 721 yards rushing) is back to spark the offense with senior running back, Joseph Morris (978 yards rushing, nine touchdowns) and classmate Jonathan Cannon paving the way for the offensive line. Vance will be tested early with a game against coach Tom Knotts and Dutch Fork (SC) and at Weddington in the first month.

Outlook: West Charlotte has 20 wins in the last five years. But new head coach Samuel Greiner has a history of rebuilding programs quickly and looks to do the same thing for the Lions. Greiner led Harding to its first state championship since the ‘50s three years ago. West Charlotte will be young with only seven starters back. The Lions’ defense will be one of their strengths with senior linebacker Sheandel Shade (9.5 sacks last year) and junior defensive back Tony Harris (two interceptions).

Outlook: West Mecklenburg has been consistent averaging eight wins per season in the last four years. This year, the Hawks have a challenge with only eight starters returning. The West Mecklenburg offense will look to senior quarterback Zaire Kenney (1,524 yards, 16 touchdowns last year) and wide receivers Aah’Quorea May and Neko Brown to move the ball. The Hawks’ defense is led by senior linebacker Joshua McGill (78 tackles) and junior LB Michael Catlin (63 tackles).
