Myers Park QB Drake Maye, a UNC recruit, selected for ‘elite’ national showcase

Myers Park HIgh quarterback Drake Maye has been selected to participate in the Elite 11 camp for the nation’s top high school quarterbacks.

Maye threw for 3,512 yards and 50 touchdowns, against two interceptions, in the 2019 season. He was named the MaxPreps’ North Carolina player of the year. He’s the No. 1 college football recruit in the state and is committed to North Carolina.

Earlier this month, Maye was named the Charlotte Observer male athlete of the year.

A 6-foot-5, 210-pound rising senior, Maye is ranked in the top 30 nationally, among all positions, by at least one recruiting service.

Maye is of 20 quarterbacks selected nationally after a pair of regional qualifying events were held in Atlanta and Los Angeles prior to the coronavirus pandemic.

Because the schedule has been altered, those 20 players will be invited to the Elite 11 finals in Murfreesboro, Tenn. June 29-July 1.

Past Elite 11 participants include Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence and North Carolina’s Sam Howell, a former Sun Valley High star. And several first round NFL draft picks are Elite 11 alumni, too, like the Dolphins’ Tua Tagovailoa, the Cardinals’ Kyler Murray and the Texas’ Deshaun Watson
