NCHSAA moves to Phase 2 of summer conditioning, workouts
Beginning Aug. 3, N.C. High School Athletic Association sports teams that are currently participating in summer conditioning will be allowed to do a little more.
The N.C. High School Athletic Association Board of Directors has voted allow member schools to move to Phase 2 of the NCHSAA’s reopening plan. Individual school districts determine whether or not its local schools will participate.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg and Wake County Schools have not announced a date to begin summer workouts. The NCHSAA has said it plans to begin fall practice Sept. 1.
The Phase 2 workout guidelines go into effect Aug. 3. Among the highlights:
- Sharing of equipment is permissible within small groups/pods.
- Wearing protective sports equipment such as pads remains prohibited.
- Equipment must be disinfected frequently, and it requires disinfecting prior to use by another pod.
For the schools that have not yet begun summer workouts, the NCHSAA encourages a gradual return to activities to allow students who may have inactive all summer to gradually get into shape.
The NCHSAA also said that it remains “committed to administering sports/activities this Fall, provided it can be done safely and in accordance with guidance from our state educational and medical partners. Decisions relative to the September 1 start date, will be made later in August.”
