Ardrey Kell High gets new head girls basketball coach from crosstown Mecklenburg school

Former Garinger High School girls basketball coach La’Tavia Rorie is moving across town to take the same job at Ardrey Kell.

Ardrey Kell athletic director Brian Knaub told the Observer that his school was hiring Rorie to replace Jeff Buseick, who recently left to become girls coach at Charlotte Latin.

Buseick’s teams were 137-39 in six seasons at Ardrey Kell. In five of them, the Knights won at least 23 games. Ardrey Kell was 16-12 in the 2019-20 season.

Rorie coached at Garinger for the past four seasons, going 7-81.

Prior to Garinger, Rorie coached at Saint Francis University and played at Virginia Commonwealth, where she was team captain from 2008-10.

She later played semi-professional basketball in Charlotte and has been a personal coach.

At Ardrey Kell, Rorie will be a teacher in the science department. The school plans a Zoom video call to introduce Rorie to current and former players on Wednesday.
