Myers Park High receiver Jordan Bly will play college football in Virginia.

Bly, a rising senior, committed Wednesday to Old Dominion University in Norfolk.

“I think Jordan is the consummate receiver,” Myers Park coach Scott Chadwick said. “He does everything well. He’s a great route runner. He’s got great hands, good speed and he understands how to get open. He understands how to read different coverages because his dad was a (defensive back). The kid’s just a heck of a team player.”

Chadwick said Bly, the son of former UNC All-American Dre Bly, patiently waited his turn while playing behind Division I receivers like Elijah Bowick (Virginia Tech), Muhsin Muhammad (Texas A&M) and Porter Rooks (N.C. State). Bly’s older brother, Trey, is a rising sophomore football player at Charlotte.

Last season, Bly caught 39 passes for 501 yards and seven touchdowns. He said he planned to graduate early in December, but would stay at Myers Park if high school football is postponed until spring.

He said he chose ODU over Georgia Southern, Elon and Campbell.

“It was a close decision,” Bly said. “But the way they talked and the way they said they would use me, that got me, and how they said the organization will be run, that caught my eye.”

Ricky Rahne, the former offensive coordinator at Penn State, will begin his first season as head coach at ODU this fall.

“He said that I would be ‘that guy,’ ” Bly, 17, said, “and that they’re trying to change the program and make it a place where everybody would love to play and fans would love to be at the games and it just seemed amazing.”

Chadwick thinks Bly has picked a school that fits his talents well.

“It would’ve been easy for him to complain and be upset over the last couple of years, having to share the ball,” Chadwick said. “He never once complained and has always just gone out and been very productive and done whatever he’s been asked to do. I’m excited for him. I think he’ll go there and have a great career there.”
