Field hockey star is first Observer athlete of week of the 2020-21 school year

Providence Day field hockey’s Leah Horwitz is the first Charlotte Observer fall sports athlete of the week for the 2020-21 school year.

Horwitz received 38 percent of more than 33,000 votes to win.

Providence Day runner Morgan Boonshaft was second and Carmel Christian volleyball player Arielle Walker was third.

Horwitz, a junior midfielder, won the reader vote after being nominated for her role in two shutouts of 2019 CISAA state champion Charlotte Country Day. The Chargers beat the Bucs 2-0 Sept. 15 and 4-0 Sept. 17.

Providence Day field hockey coach Miki Osherow said Horowitz, “had great composure shutting down Charlotte Country Day’s strongest players and using her speed to set up her teammates offensively.”

A new list of candidates will be released Sunday.
