Lake Norman’s Carly Vacarro is All-Observer girls’ lacrosse player of the year

Chris Schiemer has enjoyed many big moments in his five years as coach of the Lake Norman girls’ lacrosse team with 75 wins in his tenure.

But on May 23, Schieme’s team had its biggest victory as it won its first NCHSAA state championship , outlasting Cardinal Gibbons 17-15 in overtime.

Schiemer is the Observer girls’ lacrosse coach of the year after this season’s 18-2 record , including 6-0 in conference play.

Lake Norman junior midfielder Carly Vacarro is the Observer girls’ lacrosse player of the year after .recording 91 goals, 41 assists and 76 groundballs this season.

Vaccaro, who has committed to the University of Tampa, has been an All-Observer selection in each of her three seasons and has scored 274 goals .

FIRST TEAM

Attackers

Natalie Italiano, Charlotte Catholic, Jr.: Cougars standout had another all-conference season with 52 goals.

Michella Chester, Lake Norman, Sr.: Another big weapon for Wildcats’ offense. All-conference pick had 50 goals, 29 assists.

Kieran Rinaldi, Lake Norman, So.: All-conference pick emerged as key weapon for Wildcats with 51 goals, including five scores in the state championship game with two coming in overtime.

Annalise Heyward, Ardrey Kell, Jr.: All-American, co-conference player of the year had 35 goals, 24 assists, 53 ground balls. Will play for the U.S. Naval Academy.

Landon Shelley, Myers Park, So.: Mustangs sophomore set state record with 96 assists this season.

Midfielders

Natalie Wallon, Charlotte Catholic, Sr.: Syracuse signee and 4-time All-American had another big season with 81 goals, 13 assists, 73 takeaways, was co-conference player of the year.

Julianna Dworschak, Lake Norman, Jr.: West Point commit another major factor in state championship run with 44 goals, 35 assists, 59 ground balls, won 60 percent of draws.

Carly Vaccaro, Lake Norman, Jr.: University of Tampa commit was all over the field with 91 goals, 41 assists, 76 ground balls.

Lucy Pedlow, Charlotte Country Day, Jr.: All-American, two-time all-state pick, Cornell commit helped lead Bucs to third straight NCISAA state title in as many years.

Riley Harrison, Charlotte Country Day, Jr.: Bucs standout earned All-American honors for her play this season. Two-time all-state pick. Has committed to North Carolina.

Clare Murphy, Marvin Ridge, Sr.: Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) signee had 56 goals to lead Mavericks this season.

Defenders

Natalee Palmer, Charlotte Country Day, Jr. (also midfielder): Dartmouth signee is a versatile all-state player who can dominate in midfield/defense.

Marlo Vandiver, Nation Ford, Jr.: All-state pick had 86 ground balls, 48 takeaways, 81 draw controls (won 60 percent).

Saidey Whalen, Charlotte Catholic, Sr.: Catholic’s top defender will continue her lacrosse career at Central Michigan.

Annie Sherrill, Myers Park, Jr.: Standout defender for Mustangs considered one of best in the area.

Goalkeeper

Abby McGaha, Myers Park, Jr.: Honorable mention All-America. Has committed to St. Francis University. Has more than 500 saves in her career.
