Here’s why Myers Park High will have a new football coach next fall

Mark Harman will not return as Myers Park football coach this fall.

Harman posted on social media that the school had informed him he would not be retained.

Harman, 40, was named interim head coach in February, less than a week before the season was to begin.

Despite losing All-American QB Drake Maye and several other seniors to graduation, and a few starters to transfer, Harman led the Mustangs to a 9-0 regular-season and a Southwestern 4A conference championship. Myers Park reached the N.C. 4AA regional championship game, as far as any Mustangs team had ever been, before losing 42-7 to eventual state champion Vance.

“On Thursday night I was told I would no longer be the head coach of the Myers Park football team,” Harman wrote on Twitter Saturday. “Needless to say, these past few days have been difficult for me and my family. It’s been an honor to hold this position and I’m grateful for the opportunity.”

Efforts to reach Myers Park athletic director Brian Poore were unsuccessful.

Saturday night, Harman said he doesn’t know what he’ll do next. He is currently a physical education teacher at Myers Park and has worked at the school for six years. He said he’ll spend time with his family over the next few weeks and figure out his next steps.

“I’ve had a wonderful experience at Myers Park, both as an assistant and a head coach,” Harman said. “I value the time I have had here and the relationships I have formed, and I wish everybody all the best.”
