Here are nominees for the 2021 All-Charlotte Observer high school football team
In a short time, the Charlotte Observer high school staff will select the annual All-Observer high school football team. Here are some of the nominees.
Note: These have only lightly been edited and are taken from schools’ nomination forms. All players nominated are not listed.
QUARTERBACKS
ALEX BENTLEY, HICKORY RIDGE, QB, 5-11, 160, JR: threw for 1501 yds on 97 for 159 yds 18 TDS 2 INT. Leader of our offense and TEAM MVP SW4A All Conference
EVAN BERNARD, CUTHBERTSON, 6-0, 185, QB, SR: 6 games played , 112/151 75% (1st in conference, 2nd in 3A state among qualifiers) , 1085 passing yards (6 games) , 5 TDs , 150 Rush yards , 5 rush TDs, All-Conference (2nd time), 2nd Team All-County (2nd Time) , Wingate Commit
DYLAN BISSON, MOUNTAIN ISLAND CHARTER, 5-10, 170, QB, JR: started his first year on varsity and threw for 1,935 yards and 15 TDs in six games. Averaged 322.5 passing yards per game with a 128 QBR, 66% PCT. Including being one of only 3 players to throw for over 500 yards in a single game in Gaston County history. He added an additional 70 yards rushing and 4 TDs to finish the season with a total of 2,005 total yards in only six games. Bisson was the Mountain Island Charter Offensive Player of the Year.
XAVION BROWER, MALLARD CREEK, 6-0, 194, JR
DANTE CASCIOLA, WEDDINGTON, 6-1, 185, SR, QB: Dayton signee. Finishes career with a 28-2 record. All time UC winningest QB percentage wise. 937 yards passing, 15 touchdowns.
JACK CURTIS, ARDREY KELL, JR QB.: threw for 1,660 yards and 21 touchdowns, and ran for 113 yards and four Touchdowns. In the biggest game of the year against Vance, he threw for 286 yards and 3 touchdowns and also added a rushing Touchdown.
JAMARION DAWKINS, FORESTVIEW, 5-10, 225, SR, QB/ATH: first Team all-conference (second straight year), over 1,200 all purpose yards and 15 TD’s. Team MVP will attend Fayetteville State this fall on a football scholarship.
VIC GARRIDO, PINE LAKE PREP, 6-2, 210, QB, SR: Garrido led our team to our first-ever undefeated regular season (7-0), first conference championship, first home playoff win, and to the second round of the playoffs with a 9-1 Record. He was 90-of-152 for 1,414 yards passing with 15 TDs. He rushed 112 times for 689 yards and 13 TDs. He was the conference leading rusher. He had 12 rushing 2-point Cconversions and four passing 2-point conversions, He broke multiple school passing record (single game, season, and career). He was nominated for the Charlotte Observer POTW. He was named All-Conference QB and conference Offensive Player of the Year. He has a 3.6 GPA and is being recruited by many D2 schools.
AUSTIN GRIER, VANCE, 6-0, 205, QB, SR: Grier was 141-of-166 for 1,591 yards and 16 TDs against four interceptions. State championship game MVP will continue his academic and athletic career at Columbia University in the fall.
KADEN HAMPTON, CHASE, 5-10, 200, QB, SR: Kaden threw for 1,414 yards and 15 TDs while rushing for 594 yards and 7 TD in leading Chase to a 4-3 record. He was also named the SWC 2A Offensive Player of the Year. Kaden is committed to NC Wesleyan University.
VANCE HONEYCUTT, SALISBURY, QB, SR: 999 yards passing, 11 TDs, plus 909 rushing yards 19 TD’s. Total: 1,908 total yards with 30 TDs. Vance is a UNC baseball signee. He has a 4.4 weighted GPA and was selected to the All CCC team. Vance was recently named the overall MVP of the NCHSAA 2AA State Championship game.
TAD HUDSON, HOUGH, 6-3, 220, QB, SOPH: Tad threw for 1,623 yards and 16 TDs. He currently holds offers from Tennessee, Kentucky, Michigan St, UNC, NC St, Wake Forest, Texas, South Carolina.
GABE HUITT, SHELBY, 6-3, 195, QB, SR 138/211 (65%) 1960 yds 18 TDs.
LUCAS LENHOFF, MYERS PARK, 6-1, 190, JR: All conference QB that led the conference in passing yards and TDs. Completed 113 passes on 196 attempts, 1,940 yards and 29 TDs. Led his team to an undefeated conference championship. Myers Park made it as far as any other team in school history by hosting the state semi-finals. Showing interest from multiple D1 programs as he has a National Preps invite.
ALEX LONDON, CARSON, 5-10, 190, QB: London was 112-of-187 passing for 1,423yds, 15 tds. He rushed for 198 yds on 55 attempts and two Tds. Led offense that averaged 35 points a game and made the all conference and all county teams this season. London has a 4.0 GPA and is going to study engineering at NC State.

BLUE MONROE, JAY M ROBINSON, 6-1, QB: 1078 Passing Yards, 6 Touchdowns. 470 Rushings yards, 12 Touchdowns. 1,548 Total yards and 18 Total Touchdowns. ALL SPC
ETHAN REID, KINGS MOUNTAIN, 6-4, 230, QB, SR: Completed 81 of 147 passes for 1250 yards. 14TDs and 5 int. 5 rushing TDS. Will be attending Appalachian St as a PWO. All conference 2019 3A Big South offensive POY. Team Captain
ETHAN RHODES, MAIDEN, 6-2, 195, QB, JR: Rhodes was 107 for 182(59%) 1,744 yds(249 YPG), 14 TD, 8 INT, 4 Rushing TD in 7 games, leading Maiden to a 6-1 record and the South Fork Conference Championship. He was an All-Conference player for second time. Offensive POY Runner Up
KHAMONI ROBINSON, MONROE, 6-0, 165, SO, QB/WR/FS: Khamoni led our team this year to a 7-3 record and to one victory away from playing in the 3A state championship game as a sophomore. Completed 108-181 passes for 2,046 yards and 17 Touchdowns to 7 int’s. Khamoni also rushed for almost 300 yards and added 4 rushing TDs.
JUSTIN ROCQUEMORE, STUART CRAMER, 5’10” 190, QB, SO, -- 136/250 for 1,850 yards and 16 TD’s Also rushed for 473 yds. and 4 TD’s
RYAN TYSON, MOUNT PLEASANT, QB SR , 6’ 1” 195, Rocky River Conference Offensive Player of the Year, 104-165 for 1527 yards, 63 % completion, 16 TDS and 4 INT, 77-245 5 TDS rushing. Will play QB for Charlotte 49’ers.

MASON AVERY, WEST LINCOLN, RB/OLB: had 49 carries for 247 yards rushing and 3 TDś. 11 catches for 218 yards receiving and 1 TDś. 526 total yards of offense and 4 TD’s.. Defensively he had 69 Tackles, 4 Tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 1 Forced Fumble, 3 pass break ups, 1 Fumble Recovery, 1 Blocked FG. He had 29 yards on kick returns.
TERRANCE CHAPMAN, JAY M ROBINSON, 5-11 RB: 142 Rushes for 935 Yards, 6.6 yards per carry, 116 yards per game and 8 Touchdowns in 8 games. ALL SPC
JACK CRUMP, MONROE, 5-10, 195, JR, LB/RB: 118 carries for 895 yards and 7 rushing TD’s. He led the SCC and Union County. Led team with 82 total tackles(59 solo). Those numbers also led the SCC and the county. He also led the team in punting with a 41.0 avg. Jack was also selected to the 2020 SCC All- Conference and was runner up for the 2020 SCC Defensive Player of the Year.
BLANE FULBRIGHT, EAST BURKE, 5-9, 185, JR, RB: Fulbright rushed for 1,154 yds in 7 games. ELIJAH HORTON, CENTRAL CABARRUS, 6-0, 200, DB/RB: Signed to play at Erskine College. Co-Defensive Player of the Year for South Piedmont Conference. 73 Tackles, 5 forced fumbles, 8 TFLs, 2 Pass Break Ups, and 3 hurries. As a running back rushed for 510 yards and 7 TDs.
ELIJAH MCWILLIAMS, HOUGH, 5-6, 180, RB, Sr: Led our team in rushing with 795 yards in 9 games. He also had 7 catches for 100 yards and scored 7 touchdowns. He will be attending NC A&T in the Fall.
PAULIE MENEGAY, EAST LINCOLN, 5-10, 195, RB/LB, SR: He had 80 carries for 648 yards (8.1 YPC) and 8 rushing TD’s. 11 catches for 76 yards and 1 TD. he had 37 tackles including 6 TFL 6 PD and 2 caused fumbles. He also had 28 punts for 830 yards (29.6 ave). He was all-conference for the second year in a row, he was a captain and won the team’s overall MVP award.

ALLAN SHADE, NEWTON-CONOVER, 6-1, 215, SR, RB/OLB: Allan rushed 157 times for 1,053 yards and 27 yards receiving in only 6 games! He had 14 rushing TD’s. Allan was voted as the South Fork Offensive Player of the Year for the Spring season (All-Conference also). He has offers from Carson-Newman, Lenoir Rhyne, Judson University, Bethany, Mars Hill, Emory and Henry. Allan also had 3 tackles for loss and 3 sacks in limited Defensive action.
CAMERON SMITH, OLYMPIC, 5-10, 185, RB, SR: Smith had 971 yards rushing on 130 carries, 8 rushing TDs, and 2 Rec TDs, in 7 games, leading OLYMPIC to a 6-1 record to tie for the SoMeck 7 Conference Championship. Graded the highest of any RB in the program for the third straight season. 2019 Offensive Conference Player of the Year. Ran for 2000 yards as a JR. 3-year varsity starter. SoMeck 7 All-Conference Selection. Committed to play at NAVY.
DAYLAN SMOTHERS, VANCE, 5-11, 175, RB, SOPH: 145 attempts, 1333 yards, 14 TDs to go with 13 catches for 201 yrds 2 TDs. Helped to led Vance to its second consecutive state title while being named offensive MVP of the game. He currently has over 12 Power 5 football scholarships. He is also the recipient of the first NC high school Heisman Award as the NC high school player of the year.

SULLIVAN ABSHER, SOUTH POINT, 6-7, 275, OT, SO: leading South Point to a 5-2 record with an offense that averaged 320 yards per game. He’s being recruited by ECU, Virginia Tech, and Appalachian. He has a 4.3 GPA and made the all-conference team this season.
DEAN ANDERSON, PINE LAKE PREP, 6-3, 305, OT, SR: Anderson graded out at 95% Blocking Efficiency, allowed 2 sacks in 152 pass attempts and recorded 41 pancake blocks. He was a key piece of OL that averaged 6 yards per carry, 354.5 yards, and 38 points per game. Our QB and RB were the top 2 rushers in the conference. Anderson was named to the Southern Piedmont 1A All-Conference team. He helped lead team to its first ever undefeated regular season (7-0), first Conference Championship, first home playoff win, and to the second round of the playoffs with a 9-1 Record. He is being recruited by several D2 and D3 schools.

JL BURCH, OLYMPIC, 6-1, 280, CENTER, JR: Burch had 39 pancake blocks in 7 games, leading OLYMPIC to a 6-1 record to tie for the SoMeck 7 Conference Championship. WILL HART, PORTER RIDGE, 6’2, 275, OG, JR: Hart earned 1st Team All SW4A honors in his first year at Porter Ridge. He registered 74 Pancakes and did not give up a sack during a shortened 7-game season; He led the way for Porter Ridge’s rushing attack which registered 1,423 rush yards for the season and 203.3 yards per game.
GARRETT JORDAN, MARVIN RIDGE, 6-2, 235, SR: Garrett finished the year with 15 pancakes and 20 knockdowns. He graded out for the year at 87 percent and didn’t allow a sack all season. He was selected for the Queen City Bowl. Garrett is an All-Conference selection.

JOSH NOBLE, WEST ROWAN, 6-4, 304, DT/OT, JR: Playing both ways, he registered 25 tackles, 12 TFLs, and 1 INT on defense. Offensively, he recorded 32 pancakes in 6 games. Has had several P5 schools starting to show interest in him, including South Carolina, and Missouri. First time All conference player.
JACOB PATTERSON, SOUTH POINT, 6-4, 260, OT, JR: leading South Point to a 5-2 record with an offense that averaged 320 yards per game. He’s being recruited by Army, Navy and Appalachian. He has a 3.6 GPA and made the all-conference team for the second straight season. started for the third year in a row.
BRADIN REPPART, PINE LAKE PREP, 5-11, 215, C, SOPH: Reppart was honored as an All-Conference Center. He recorded a 93% blocking grade. He only allowed 1 sack in 152 pass attempts. He had 99.7 Shotgun Snap Efficiency and recorded 13 pancake blocks. He was a key piece of offense that averaged 6 yards per carry, 354.5 yards per game, and 38 points per game.
JEMARION RUSHING, MONROE, 6-3, 315, SR, LG: protected the blind side for our quarterback starting all 10 games, Rushing only gave up one sack on the season. Monroe threw for 2,046 yards and 17 touchdowns in only 9 games. Jemarion was primarily being the pulling guard and sealing off the backside on run plays which led to 1,887 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns in only 10 games. Was selected as 2020 SCC All- Conference and received scholarship offer to play football at Winston Salem St. University
OMARION RUSHING, MONROE, 6-3, 280, SR, OG: 3-year starter paved the way for rushing attack that ended with 1,887 yards on the season and 19 rushing touchdowns in only 9 games. Omarion only allowed 1 sack all year and was selected as 2020 SCC All- Conference. Omarion accepted an scholarship offer to play football at Winston-Salem St. in this upcoming season.
TYKEL SMITH, KINGS MOUNTAIN, 6-0, 280, JR, OL: 20 pancake blocks, Grade out 82%, 1st team Big South All conference
COLIN SURRATT, CREST, 6-1, 300, SR, OL: 55 knock downs and grade out 82% for the season. Selected for the 2020 Shrine Bowl and the 2021 East/West game in July.
TREVOR TATE, CUTHBERTSON, 6’4 280, OG/C, JR: Averaging over 5 pancake blocks a game and grading out over 90%. He was named to the Southern Carolina 3A All-Conference team. He is currently being recruited by Air Force, Navy, Army, Wake Forest, USC, Coastal Carolina, and some more. He has a 4.0 GPA
JACOB TODD, FORESTVIEW, 6’6”, 240lbs., Senior, OL, 1st Team All-Conference, Team Scholar Athlete of the Year Award winner. 3.5 GPA, Signed with Erskine College to play football.
CANNON TURNER, HICKORY RIDGE, 6-3, 260, OL, JR: was a steady hand all year at RT. Helped an offense that over 30 PTS a game 150 yds passing 200 yds rushing. SW 4A - All Conference
TIGHT ENDS
SAM CORNACCHIONE, PINE LAKE PREP, 6-2, 220, TE, SR: Cornacchione is a three time All-Conference player (TE and LB this year). He had 17 receptions for 238 yards and 2TDs and 1 Rushing TD. He helped pave the way for running game which averaged 205 yards per game and 6 yards per carry. Our QB and RB were the top 2 rushers in the conference. Cornacchione graded out at 96% Blocking Efficiency and had 24 pancake blocks.
JAYDEN HOOPER, R-S CENTRAL, 6-4, 220, TE/WR/OLB: Hooper had 3 receptions for 143 yards with 2 TD on triple option team. He led the team in tackles with 47, 1 sack, 6 TFL and 1 Forced fumble. 2 time all-conference member and signed with Lenoir-Rhyne University to play TE for the Bears. Was selected to the 2021 East / West All Star game as an athlete. He will play TE and OLB.
BRYSON NESBIT, SOUTH MECKLENBURG, 6-6 240, SR, TE: 31 receptions for 400 yards and 5 TD’s in 6 games. He has signed his NLI to North Carolina and opted to stay and play his senior season instead of being an early enrollee. He was also name So-meck 7 Conference Offensive Player of the Year. 2 year team Captain.

COLE HART, MOUNTAIN ISLAND CHARTER, 6-0, 175, WR, SR: Cole Hart led the Southern Piedmont conference in receiving. He finished with 605 yards in only 7 games at 24.2 yards per catch and averaged 84.6 yards receiving per game and 101.1 total offense yards per game and 4 TDs on the season. Cole Hart was selected All-Conference. Cole is also a key contributor on the baseball team.
CHRISTIAN HAMILTON, HICKORY RIDGE, 6-0, 175, SOPH: Led our team in receptions and TD’s... 22 for 379 with 3 TDS and has over 14+ D1 Offers Including ORE, GA, PSU, UNC Number #4 WR USA and 31st Player overall in 2023 class

SHALEEK KNOTTS, MONROE, DB/WR, 6-3, 185, JR: 5-Star Recruit led the team in receiving for the third straight season with 34 catches for 607 yds (17.9avg) 7 Td’s. Was starting free safety and was 2nd on the team where he totaled 55 tackles(46 solo) and 3 Int’s. 2021 Southern Carolina Conference All- Conference and SCC Offensive Player of the Year. Shaleak has currently received 25 Division I College football scholarship offers.
KIYLAN MILLER, CHASE, 6-1, 180, SR, WR: Kiylan caught 35 passes for 658 yards and 8 TDs. Also rushed for 129 yards and 7 TDs. Also returned a kickoff for a TD and started on defense with 42 total tackles, 2 Int, one of which he returned for a TD, and recovered a fumble while leading CHASE to a 4-3 record. Kiylan has signed with Coastal Carolina University.
CHANCE MORROW, WEST CHARLOTTE, 6-6, 202, WR, JR: Offers from Ohio State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, as well Louisville offers in the last two weeks. Caught seven 7 TDs, 4 jump ball 2-point conversations, racked up two games with multiple td’s; 37 catches for 627 yards in 7 games in the best conference in NC; All I-MECK pick.
DAVYN REID JR, MOORESVILLE, WR: Led our team in receiving yards and receiving TD. Over 15 yards per catch
