North Mecklenburg High boys basketball star Jeremy Gregory is leaving North Carolina for his senior year of high school.

Gregory, a 6-foot-8 power forward, will play for national power Oak Hill in Virginia.

Gregory continues a line of top N.C. players in recent years to leave the state. At Oak Hill, for example, Gregory will play with former HIckory Grove star Caleb Foster, a 5-star recruit who recently picked up an offer from Duke.

Before the most recent school year, Foster left North Carolina along with three other top 50 national recruits: Jaden Bradley left Cannon School for Florida’s IMG Academy; Jalen Hood Schifino left Combine Academy for Montverde (Fla.) Academy; and MJ Rice left Durham Academy for Oak Hill.

So far this summer, two other national recruits have left the state. Trey Green left Lake Norman Christian and will attend Link (MO) Academy; Aiden Holloway left Covenant Day for La Lumiere (IND).

Now, add Gregory to that list.

Gregory, the No. 12 player in the N.C. class of 2022 by Phenom Hoop Report, helped lead North Mecklenburg to a state championship as a sophomore.

As a junior, Gregory was a second team All Charlotte Observer pick who averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds. Gregory said he has college scholarship offers from Appalachian State, Charlotte, East Tennessee State, James Madison, Mercer, Old Dominion, Rice, South Florida, UNC-Greensboro and Western Carolina,

“I feel like I’ll miss playing with my teammates at North Mecklenburg,” Gregory said, “and I’ll miss the school. I enjoyed my team there. I just felt like during the pandemic, we kind of lost a year, so I wanted to get that time back I thought I lost.”

Gregory’s brother, Donovan, is a starter for the Appalachian State team that made the NCAA Tournament last season. Gregory’s father, Jerome, said his son would remain in the class of 2022 but felt like Oak Hill’s competitive and basketball-focused environment would be good for his son.

“Basically,” Jerome Gregory said, “we wanted him to get a little more developed, get him ready for college. (Oak HIll) had a lot of things to offer him. Oak Hill has a strong strength and conditioning program and they have it where it’s basically school and basketball, and he can get that training and development he needs there.”
