Weddington, Myers Park, Providence Day score cross-country meet titles.

Boys’ teams from Weddington and Myers Park and the Providence Day girls’ squad were champions in big early-season cross-country meets Saturday in the Charlotte area.

Weddington took the Boys’ Championship division at the Providence Invitational, run at McAlpine Greenway Park. As is often the case, the Warriors were closely pressed by Union County rival Cuthbertson. Weddington’s margin of victory was just three points.

Meanwhile, in the annual Carolinas Kickoff Meet at Metrolina Christian School in Indian Trail, the team champions were the Myers Park boys and Providence Day girls. Each team won comfortably.

Providence meet

Marvin Ridge’s Ethan Snyder won the boys’ individual title, finishing the 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) course in 15 minutes 53.6 seconds. He was three seconds ahead of runner-up Elliott Kleckner of South Central. Rounding out the top five were Patrick Gibbons (Ardrey Kell), Gavin Sweeney (Lake Norman) and Nathan Geyer (D.H. Conley).

Green Hope, a Cary school, edged Lake Norman 82-85 for the team title. Weddington (97), Ardrey Kell (117), Cardinal Gibbons (126), Charlotte Catholic (162), Providence (204), Cuthbertson (219), Marvin Ridge (239) and North Lincoln (241) rounded out the top 10.

The girls’ champion was Hannah Vroon of James Island. Her time of 18:18.9 was nearly eight seconds ahead of runner-up Hannah Rae Shaffer of Cardinal Gibbons. Lilly Walters (Hough), Alyssa Preisano (Cuthbertson) and Emma Jones (Weddington) rounded out the top five.

Trailing Weddington and Cuthbertson in the team scoring were West Forsyth (103), Cardinal Gibbons (118), James Island (120), Marvin Ridge (149), North Lincoln (183), Providence (192), Hough (279) and Pinecrest (295) in the top 10.

Metrolina Christian meet

Porter Ridge’s Jacob Laney ran to victory in the boys’ race, finishing in 15:39.4 and finishing nearly a half-minute ahead of his nearest competition. Rounding out the top five were Eli Julian (unattached), Luke Terrell (Myers Park), Evan Guiney (Myers Park) and Logan Shaffer (Parkwood).

With three runners in the top 10, Myers Park easily won the team title, scoring 40 points. The rest of the top 10: Charlotte Latin (91), York County Homeschool (113), Community School of Davidson (142), Providence Day School (145), Metrolina Christian (198), Central Academy (234), Parkwood (271) and Jesse Carson (276).

Avery Shope, of the York County Homeschool team, was the girls’ individual winner in a time of 18:37.7. She finished 13 seconds ahead of runner-up Carly Arrington of Providence Day.

Blane McElroy (Providence Day), Lily Pareso (Myers Park) and Leah Whiteside (Community School of Davidson) finished 3-4-5.

Providence Day (39 points) finished comfortably ahead of second-place Charlotte Latin (71).

Rounding out the top 10 were Myers Park (86), Community School of Davidson (158), York Homeschool (182), Mountain Island Charter (228), Metrolina Christian (231), Pine Lake Prep (243), Charlotte Catholic (243) and Piedmont (255).

Weekend’s standouts

Will Bowers (Concord soccer): Bowers, the Spiders’ goalkeeper, registered shutouts in his team’s victories over Carrboro and Northwood in the N.C. Soccer Coaches Association Kick-Off event in Cary.

Jacob Laney (Porter Ridge cross-country): Laney dominated the boys’ race in the Carolinas Kickoff Meet at Metrolina Christian, winning by nearly a half-minute. He covered the 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) in a time of 15 minutes 39.4 seconds.

Ethan Snyder (Marvin Ridge cross-country): Snyder topped an elite field in the Boys’ Championship division of the Providence Invitational Meet at McAlpine Greenway Park. He covered the 5 kilometers in a time of 15:53.6.

Boys’ soccer

Charlotte Latin and South Mecklenburg were among the Charlotte-area winners Friday and Saturday in the annual N.C. Soccer Coaches’ Association’s Kick-Off event at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, near Raleigh.

The Hawks got past tradition eastern North Carolina soccer power Swansboro 2-1 on Saturday. Noah and Edward Guggenheimer scored for Charlotte Latin.

South Mecklenburg downed Heritage 4-1. Victor Ortiz, Kheyne Ona, Luke Faucette and Juan Cabrera each scored for the Sabres.

Other scores from the Kick-Off:

Cleveland 8, Gray Stone Day 1: Logan Pleasant scored two goals and had three assists for the victorious Rams.

Concord 2, Northwood 0: Oliver Coreas scored two goals, and Will Bowers logged his second straight shutout with five saves.

Cox Mill 5, C.B. Aycock 1: The Chargers trailed 1-0 at the half and then dominated the final 40 minutes. Blake Gilbert had a goal and two assists.

Lincoln Charter 5, Graham 2: The Eagles ran their record to 3-0-1, scoring three first-half goals and pulling away.

Concord 2, Carrboro 0 (Friday): Seniors Isaac Arellanes and Andrew Boehler scored for the Spiders, and goalkeeper Will Bowers earned a clean sheet with four saves.

Franklin Academy 4, Langtree Charter 2 (Friday): Landon Metzler scored Langtree Charters goals, and Logan Story had the Lions’ assists.

Wake Forest 1, Cox Mill 1 (Friday): Chris Andrews scored for Cox Mill, which had 12 shots on goal. Wake Forest goalkeeper Noah Kump had 11 saves.

In other Saturday soccer:

Cape Fear Academy 3, Christ the King 2: Junior Drew Hanson scored both goals for Christ the King.

Gaston Day 7, University Christian 0: Marco Wright had three goals and an assist, and Roman Edmond added two goals for the Spartans (3-1). Jack D’Amore added two assists, and Ben Spencer had a goal and two assists. Goalkeeper Payne Fulghum earned his third shutout of the season.

Independence 1, R.J. Reynolds 1: This was part of the Mellow Mushroom Invitational at Boone.

Watauga 0, T.C. Roberson 0: The Pioneers, playing in the nightcap of the Mellow Mushroom Invitational, outshot Roberson 9-6 but were held scoreless.

In other Friday soccer:

Cabarrus Stallions 7, Asheville Homeschool 0: Sophomore Daniel Copeland and junior Jack Zappone each scored twice for the Stallions.

Davidson Day 9, Winston-Salem Christian 3: The Patriots unleashed 16 shots and were ahead 8-2 at halftime.

Fred T. Foard 1, Newton-Conover 0

Mountain Island Charter 3, Queens Grant Charter 2: Tanner Baxter assisted on each goal for the victorious Raptors. Owen Bright, Tanner Bingham and Knox Hinkson got the goals.

South Caldwell 3, St. Stephens 2

Girls’ tennis

Charlotte Country Day 9, Carmel Christian 0: Anna Torstrick swept Passion Kabne 6-3, 6-2 in No. 1 singles, getting the Buccaneers off to a big start. Other winners were Tenley Hippensteel, Arden Anton, Alexa Cone, Gabby Baskett and Lulu Sasz in singles. Anton and Cone also teamed for victory in No. 1 doubles.

Girls’ volleyball

Davie County def. Maiden 3-0

Gaston Day def. University Christian 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-15): The Spartans, who lost Thursday to 13-time South Carolina state champion Dorman, bounced back Friday with a sweep. Mary Kate Hurst had 25 digs, Anna Bradley Bing had 23 assists and seven kills, and Drew Brown totaled 15 kills. Gaston Day improved to 8-4 on the season.

South Iredell def. Maiden 3-1 (26-24, 25-19, 21-25, 25-15)

South Iredell def. Davie County 3-2 (20-25, 13-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-12); The Vikings rallied from a 2-0 set deficit and handed Davie County its first loss in five matches.
