Charlotte Country Day’s girls win big cross-country event

Top-five performances by Kasey Cone and Linda Fonville led Charlotte Country Day to the International Girls Division championship Saturday at the Eye Opener Invitational Meet in Spartanburg.

The Buccaneers topped a field loaded with cross-country powers from the Carolinas, Virginia, Tennessee and Georgia.

“This is the most prestigious meet victory in the history of our cross-country program,” said Charlotte Country Day coach Matthew Elliott.

The Buccaneers finished with 85 points, while James Island was second with 107 and Riverside High from the Greenville, S.C., area was third (126).

The meet was run at the Roger Milliken Center.

Heathwood Hall’s Madelyn Gomez was the International Girls individual winner, with Cone second and Fonville fifth. Also in the top 20 were teammates Abby Kerrins (14th) and Harper Shaw (19th).

In the Championship Girls division, Waccamaw (S.C.) was the team winner. Mallard Creek finished 12th, Covenant Day 13th, and Thomas Jefferson Academy 15th.

Brooke Hope of R-S Central ran fifth, and Kaitlyn Rowe of Thomas Jefferson Academy was 15th.

In the Championship Boys division, River Bluff was the team champion, with Covenant Day fifth and Charlotte Country Day sixth.

Charlotte Country Day’s Connor Kleiderer finished second, with teammate Peter Pignetti 22nd. R-S Central’s Van Robbins was 10th, and Covenant Day’s Andrew Hempe finished 16th.

Fleet Feet Invitational

Mooresville’s boys and Asheville’s girls won team titles in this meet, at Salisbury Community Park.

Jesse Carson was fourth and Parkwood fifth in the boys’ event, with Mooresville senior Tanner Smith winning the individual title. Teammate Clark Kremar was third.

Mooresville finished second and Jesse Carson third in the girls’ race.

The individual winner, Asheville’s Natalie Nery, finished 3 seconds ahead of runner-up Sami Homburger of Mooresville.

Boys’ soccer

Carmel Christian 2, Rabun Gap School 1: The host Cougars improved to 3-0-1 and handed the Eagles (4-1-1) their first setback.

Freedom 4, East Burke 1

Garinger 4, Ashbrook 0: The visiting Wildcats won for the fifth time in six matches this season.

Hibriten 10, West Caldwell 1

Lake Norman 2, Ledford 2
