Myers Park, Cox Mill score big soccer victories Tuesday
Two of the Charlotte area’s top 4A high school soccer teams scored big victories Tuesday and remained undefeated.
Myers Park, the 4A state playoff runner-up last season, ran its record to 2-0 by blanking host Marvin Ridge 6-0.
And Cox Mill, off to a 6-0-1 start, got past perennial power Hough 2-1.
Thomas Killeen led Myers Park with a goal and three assists, and Gannon Peters added a goal and two assists. The Mustangs are scheduled to open South Meck 4A Conference play Sept. 16 against South Mecklenburg.
Meanwhile, Cox Mill got goals from Zach Fitzgerald and Cole Wilson in its victory. Hough (4-2) scored on a goal by senior midfielder Antonio Lagua. Nic Patrignani got the assist.
Tuesday’s standouts
Aaliyah Byers (Kings Mountain volleyball): Byers, a senior, had 17 kills in her team’s victory over North Gaston. For the season, she is averaging more than four kills and three digs per set.
Josiah Garrett (Garinger soccer): Garrett’s three goals and three assists helped lead Garinger to a 9-0 romp over West Charlotte.
Thomas Killeen (Myers Park soccer): Killeen, a senior striker, had a goal and three assists in the Mustangs’ 6-0 blanking of host Marvin Ridge. In two matches this season, he has a pair of goals and four assists.

MECKLENBURG
Berry Academy 2, North Mecklenburg 1: Jesus Vazquez and Angel Cabrera scored for the Cardinals, who are now 3-1-1.
Carmel Christian 4, Gaston Day 3: Bond Uzomba scored two goals, and teammates Matthew Goodale and Samy Kolby added single tallies for the victors. Marco Wright had two goals and an assist for Gaston Day, and teammate Ben Spencer added a goal.
Charlotte Christian 7, Metrolina Christian 0: Sophomores Nick Rosen and Tripp Woody each scored twice for the Knights, and Rosen added an assist. Hab McLain had a goal and three assists, Isaac Schmittke added a goal and an assist, and Luca Vachino scored a goal.
Corvian Community 5, Sugar Creek Charter 2
Davidson Day 5, Asheville Christian 1: The Patriots scored four times in the second half for a home victory.
Garinger 9, West Charlotte 0: The Wildcats ran their record to 6-1, with Josiah Garrett scoring three goals and adding three assists. Edwin Clemente also had three assists.
Hickory Ridge 8, Chambers 0: Ty Fritts and Andry Rosales-Nunez each scored twice, as the visiting Ragin’ Bulls remained unbeaten (4-0).

Lake Norman 2, Butler 0: Lake Norman broke a scoreless halftime tie for a road victory.
Mallard Creek 5, St. Stephens 0: The visiting Mavericks trailed 2-1 at halftime but rallied in the final 40 minutes.
Queens Grant Charter 4, Mount Pleasant 2: Liam Lorenzatti scored two goals for the victors. Anthony Armas added a goal and an assist, and Gabe Massey scored a goal. Jackson Smith got both of Mount Pleasant’s tallies.
SouthLake Christian 9, Hickory Grove Christian 0: SouthLake scored seven times in the second half for a road Metrolina Athletic Conference victory.
Weddington 1, Ardrey Kell 1: J.P. Linner scored on an assist from Jalen Simon, giving Weddington (4-0-1) a 1-0 halftime lead. But the host Knights (2-2-2) earned a tie when Tiago Bittencourt scored in the second half.

Fred T. Foard 5, East Burke 4: Peyton Proctor and Symone Akel won the No. 3 doubles match, lifting the Tigers to victory. Anna Schmidt took No. 1 singles in three sets, and teammates Proctor, Akel and Roxy Sylvester also won in singles.
Lake Norman Charter 9, South Rowan 0: Sidney Ross got the Knights off to a big start with a 6-0, 6-1 victory in No. 1 singles. The Lake Norman Charter doubles team of Gaeun Jeon and Anu Atla won by an 8-0 score.

Mallard Creek def. North Mecklenburg 3-1 (22-25, 25-16, 25-17, 25-17): The visiting Mavericks rallied from a 1-0 set deficit and improved to 3-0 in the conference.

Ardrey Kell def. Myers Park 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 25-12, 25-19): The visiting Knights improved to 5-0 overall, winning their conference opener. Myers Park is 3-2, 1-1.

Butler def. East Mecklenburg 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-14): Mya Sellers and Abigail Leo each had five kills for East Mecklenburg.
Charlotte Catholic def. Rocky River 3-0 (25-9, 25-5, 25-11): Bella Short, Jenna Rotola and Caroline Rodriguez each had five kills for the Cougars.

South Point def. Hunter Huss 3-0 (25-7, 25-8, 25-7): Chloe Ratliff (six kills, five aces) and Emily Revels (20 assists) led the visitors.

South Iredell def. Hickory Ridge 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-8): Molly Smyth had a big match for South Iredell, with 17 assists, 10 digs and five aces. Teammates Brooke Aeschliman (11 kills), Brooklyn Ford (11 digs) and Hannan Van Burner (eight kills) contributed.

Concord def. Northwest Cabarrus 3-0
Lake Norman Charter def. South Rowan 3-2 (19-25, 25-21, 29-27, 22-25, 15-7): The Knights won a marathon match, with Rachel Turner totaling 23 kills and 20 digs for the victors. Reece Shore and Sarah Turner each added 14 kills, and Charley Henderson had 29 digs.
West Rowan def. Central Cabarrus 3-0: Maia Gaeta had six kills and Noe Gaeta 12 assists for the Falcons.

Salisbury def. South Davidson 3-0: Katie Peeler’s 15 digs and three aces led the Hornets. Ashley Yang added 22 assists.
