Myers Park sweeps its own cross-country meet Saturday

Myers Park ran off with all four individual and team championships Saturday in the MPXC Invitational Meet which the Mustangs hosted.

Sophomore Luke Terrell won the boys’ varsity race, covering the 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) course in a time of 17 minutes 40.6 seconds. That was about nine seconds faster than runner-up Jacob Barrow of Grimsley.

And in the team scoring, Myers Park finished with 41 points, finishing ahead of South Mecklenburg (50) and Grimsley (68).

Rounding out the top five in the boys’ race were Richard Waller (East Mecklenburg) and a pair of South Mecklenburg runners, Caleb Roesch and Alec McMillan.

Senior Lily Pareso of Myers Park took the girls’ varsity race in a time of 21:41.83. That was about seven seconds ahead of second-place Reagan O’Quinn of Piedmont. Madison Marcus (Myers Park), Claire Adcock (Grimsley) and Drew Marcia (Grimsley) rounded out the top five.

Myers Park edged Grimsley for the team title 34-38.

Butler 4, Porter Ridge 4: Tony Rodriguez scored on a penalty kick late in the second half, earning a tie for host Butler. Esteban Coto scored two Butler goals, and Anthony Vazquiz got the other.

Central Academy 1, Community School of Davidson 0: The Cougars (4-2-2) won this meeting of 2A powers. Community School of Davidson (4-1-2) was blanked despite getting off 20 shots.

Charlotte Latin 4, Cary Academy 1: Walker Mermans, Ryan Mitchell, Devin Reinhardt and Devan Amin scored for the Hawks, who improved to 5-2 on the season.

Christ School 1, Providence Day 0 (OT): Providence Day had 10 shots on goal, but Christ School got the victory when Jonathan Chen scored on an assist from Wells Edwards in overtime.

Covenant Day 2, Legion Collegiate 0: Ben Collins and Hayes Wright each scored for the victors.

Durham Academy 2, Charlotte Christian 1: Isaac Schmitke scored for the Knights.

Hickory Christian 6, Northside Christian 0

Forsyth Home Educators 3, Greater Cabarrus Stallions 2: Jomar Santiago and Angel Overcash scored for the Stallions.

Lake Norman 1, North Iredell 0

Lincoln Charter 9, West Lincoln 0: The Eagles scored on nine of their 15 shots.

Union Academy 1, Langtree Charter 0: Patrick MacKinnon made 10 saves in earning the shutout, and Liam MacKinnon scored on an assist from Kyle Havican for the Cardinals.

Charlotte Latin 1, North Raleigh Christian 0: Ryan Mitchell scored the game’s only goal, and teammate Sutton Shumate got the shutout in goal.

T.C. Roberson 3, Charlotte Catholic 1: The visitors outscored the Cougars 2-0 in the second half.

OUTSIDE MECKLENBURG

Cannon School 5, Concord Academy 4: Down 4-2 at the half, Cannon School rallied. Michael Micolucci scored two goals, and Ben Childers had a goal and an assist.

Cross-country

Wilmington Beach Blast: The Charlotte Country Day girls earned another prestigious championship, taking the girls’ division title in this meet. The Buccaneers had five runners finish in the top seven of this night meet. Kasey Cone and Linda Fonville finished 1-2 for Charlotte Country Day, and Harper Shaw (fifth), Abby Kerrins (sixth) and Anna Maynard (seventh) were also near the lead.

In the boys’ race, Charlotte Country Day finished seventh of 12 teams. Connor Kleiderer was second overall, with Pete Pignetti running 10th.

Girls’ field hockey

Cary Christian 1, Charlotte Country Day 0 (OT): Reid Miller’s overtime goal gave Cary Christian an overtime victory on Friday.

Charlotte Country Day 8, Pottstown (PA) The Hill School 0: The Bucs bounced back Saturday, as Aubrey Turner, Melea Weber and Maggie Kondrath each scored a pair of goals. Madison Orsi and Emilie Kirschner each added a goal. Zella Thomas had seven saves in goal for the shutout.

Girls’ tennis

Charlotte Latin 5, Charlotte Catholic 4: Charlotte Catholic’s Maggie Gehrig downed Nina Lavelle 6-2, 6-3 in No. 1 singles, but the Hawks won the No. 3-6 singles matches and one doubles contest for a narrow victory. In the closest match, at No. 4 singles, Charlotte Latin’s Mayes Fisher beat Caroline Nelson 6-4, 7-6 (4). In No. 3 singles, the Hawks’ Samantha DeWeese edged Charlotte Bergman 7-6, 6-4.
