Second half goal lifts Providence to big soccer victory Tuesday
The first meeting of traditional boys’ soccer powers Providence and Charlotte Catholic as fellow members of the Southwestern 4A Conference was a thriller.
The visiting Panthers got a goal late in the match Tuesday night and beat Charlotte Catholic 2-1.
Providence (5-0-2, 1-0) had gone up 1-0 at halftime, but the Cougars (2-4, 0-1) tied the score in the second half on a goal by Daniel Wilkinson.
Taylor Uszaki scored late in the game, giving Providence its winning margin.
Tuesday’s standouts
Audrey Bennett (Providence volleyball): Bennett was at the top of her service game Tuesday, with 10 aces in her team’s sweep of Rocky River.
Hab McLain (Charlotte Christian soccer): McLain, a senior midfielder, scored twice as his team beat Providence Day 4-1. In eight matches this season, McLain has seven goals and five assists.
Tiago Bittencourt (Ardrey Kell soccer): Bittencourt, a senior forward, scored three goals and added an assist in his team’s 9-0 blanking of Harding. For the season, Bittencourt has 12 goals and three assists in eight matches – and five goals in the past two days.

Ardrey Kell 9, Harding 0: Seven players scored for the Knights, led by Tiago Bittencourt (three goals, one assist). Quinn McGuire added a goal and two assistrs.
South Mecklenburg 2, Olympic 0: Taylor Scott’s goal with 10 minutes remaining sealed victory for the Sabres (4-2-1, 1-0), who scored twice in the second half off the Trojans (4-7, 0-2).

Butler 3, Garinger 0: The Bulldogs (5-1-1, 1-0) scored all their goals in the first half and blanked the Wildcats (6-2-1, 0-1), who are off to their best start in several seasons. Kevin Navia had two goals and an assist, and Eli Swett scored once.
Rocky River 3, East Mecklenburg 2: Down 2-0 early in the second half, the Ravens (4-1, 1-0) rallied past the Eagles (3-5, 0-1)

A.L. Brown 2, Hickory Ridge 1: The Wonders (5-4-1) rallied and handed the Ragin’ Bulls (7-1-1, 0-1) their first loss of the season.
Cox Mill 4, Mooresville 0: Cole Wilson and Blake Gilbert each had a goal and an assist for the unbeaten Chargers (8-0-1, 1-0). Aadi Singh and Ethan Saunders each added a goal. Mooresville is 5-4, 0-1.
West Cabarrus 3, South Iredell 2: The host Wolverines improved to 6-1, 1-0.

Charlotte Christian 3, Cannon School 0: Hab McLain’s two goals and an assist led the Knights. Andrew Boythe scored the other goal, and Albert Berenguer and Nick Rosen each had an assist.
Charlotte Latin 4, Providence Day 1: Noah Guggenheimer’s two goals led the Hawks (7-3, 1-0). Ryan Mitchell and Branch Stedman scored once apiece. Griffin Weidner got the goal for the Chargers (3-3, 0-1).
Covenant Day 4, Charlotte Country Day 3: Joel Russ had a goal and an assist, and Drew Boukidis, Ben Billiard and Walker Joyce added goals for the victors.

Concord 3, Lake Norman Charter 0: The Spiders spoiled Lake Norman Charter’s first conference match in the 3A ranks, as Matthew Avila-Chona had two goals and an assist. Oliver Coreas added a goal and an assist. Lake Norman Charter goalkeeper Chas Hawley had 15 saves.
Jesse Carson 3, South Rowan 2 (OT): Junior Rios, David Garcia and Adrian Guerrero scored for the victors.
West Rowan 2, East Rowan 0: Juan Ramon scored both goals, and Luis Cruz hade six saves for the shutout.
WESTERN FOOTHILLS 3A
St. Stephens 7, South Caldwell 1: St. Stephens led only 2-1 at the half but pulled away. Collin Buff and Eduardo Figueroa each scored two goals, and Elisea Coronado and Isaac Zavala each added a goal and an assist.

East Gaston 5, Cherryville 1: Yahir Gonzalez scored two goals for the Warriors. Caleb Cassada, Tyler Powell and Brandon Fairfield added single tallies.
Thomas Jefferson Academy 1, Burns 0: Nate Halliday’s goal and Saxton Riggs’ play in goal helped the Gryphons (1-2, 1-0) hand the Bulldogs (4-1-1, 0-1) their first loss.

Metrolina Christian 6, Grace Academy 4: Dylan Krakker’s three goals and an assist paced the Warriors. Ale Perez added a goal and an assist, and Eli Robinson had two assists.

CANNON SCHOOL MEET
Cannon School’s boys and the Carmel Christian girls were team winners in a meet at Cannon School’s rugged course.
The Cannon School boys finished with 53 points, followed by Greater Cabarrus Stallions (55), Carmel Christian (73), Davidson Day (79) and Christ the King (82). Cannon School’s Aidan Finn was the individual winner, with several teammates setting career-best times.
Carmel Christian’s girls finished with 32 points, followed by Cannon School (36) and Christ the King (62).

Charlotte Country Day 3, Covenant Day 2 (OT): Cameron Park’s two goals led the Buccaneers. George O’Neill added a goal on an assist from Addie Paradise. Mary Frances Neil and Tyra Jones scored for Covenant Day.

Forsyth Country Day wins: Host Forsyth Country Day beat Davidson Day and Charlotte Country Day in a three-team event at Forsyth Country Club in Winston-Salem. Medalist honors went to the hosts Ava Gutshall, who shot a 42. Davidson Day’s scorers were Lexi Justice (49), Alexis Blanchette (50) and Gracie Redmond (54).
Charlotte Country Day scorers were Sarah Blair Harner (47), Annabelle Thomas (53) and Zoe Mantooth (58).
Girls’ tennis
Charlotte Country Day 9, Covenant Day 0: Arden Anton edged Delaney Martin 4-6, 6-3 (10-4) in a tightly-contested No. 1 singles match, getting the Buccaneers started. Anna Torstrick, Tenley Hippensteel, Gabby Baskett, Alexa Cone and Julia McConnell also won in singles, and Torstrick teamed with Anton to win No. 1 doubles.

East Mecklenburg def. Independence 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-22): Sophie Gerlach’s 10 assists led the Eagles (5-6, 3-1) over the Patriots (1-4, 0-3).
