Myers Park scores key soccer win; CATA coach hits milestone

Realinment of North Carolina’s high school athletic conferences has left Myers Park playing soccer in the same conference with traditional powers South Mecklenburg and Ardrey Kell.

The Mustangs passed their first test in the South Meck 4A on Monday, edging host South Mecklenburg 2-1.

The Sabres, runners-up in last season’s 4A state playoffs, improved to 4-0 on the season, winning their conference opener behind goals by Gannon Peters and Michael Guarda. Peters also assisted on Guarda’s goal.

South Mecklenburg (4-3-1, 0-1) got a goal from Tyler Scott.

All of the scoring came in the first half.

Milestone for coach

Central Academy boys’ soccer coach Jay Niessner reached a milestone Monday, as his team beat host Mount Pleasant 5-0.

It was the 150th career coaching victory for Niessner.

Jose Dominguez and Nata Tewelde led the Central Academy attack, with two goals and an assist apiece.

Monday’s standouts

Landon Metzler (Langtree Charter soccer): Metzler scored four goals in his team’s 5-1 romp at Lincoln Charter. In seven matches this season, Metzler has 14 goals and three assists, with three matches of three or more goals.

Allison Oberlin-Pope (East Mecklenburg volleyball): Oberlin-Pope had 10 kills, five aces and two blocks, as the Eagles beat visiting Olympic 3-1.

Chris Vides (Jay M. Robinson soccer): Vides, a junior striker, scored three goals in his team’s 5-1 victory at Gray Stone Day. In 11 matches, Vides has seven goals and six assists – with six goals in the last three matches.

QUEEN CITY 3A-4A

Hopewell 10, West Charlotte 1: The Titans scored seven times in the first half.

Hough 9, West Mecklenburg 0: Antonio Lagua and Nic Patrignani each scored twice, leading the Huskies (7-2, 3-0). Wesley Sanders added three assists.

Mallard Creek 3, Hough 0: The Mavericks improved to 2-1 in conference play.

SOUTHWESTERN 4A

Providence 5, Butler 0: The Bulldogs (5-2-1, 1-1), ranked ninth in 4A by Maxpreps, hung with the sixth-rated Panthers (6-0-2, 2-0) for a half, trailing 1-0 at intermission. But Providence broke loose in the final 40 minutes.

Forestview 5, Kings Mountain 2: The visiting Jaguars (6-2-1, 3-0) built a big early lead.

South Point 8, Crest 0: The visiting Red Raiders jumped to a 5-0 halftime lead.

WESTERN FOOTHILLS 3A

East Lincoln 6, Statesville 0: The Mustangs (5-3, 3-0) scored five times in the second half. The Greyhounds are 1-5-1, 0-2.

Hickory 6, North Lincoln 1: The Red Tornadoes improved to 8-2, 2-1.

North Iredell 4, St. Stephens 1: The Warriors (5-2-1, 2-1) won this battle for second place, dropping St. Stephens to 5-3, 1-2.

CATAWBA VALLEY 2A

Bunker Hill 6, West Lincoln 1: The Bears outscored West Lincoln 4-0 in the second half. Aiden Avila had two goals and an assist, and Giovanni Vargas had a pair of goals.

Lincolnton 3, Bandys 0: The Wolves (5-0-1, 3-0) scored twice in the late going to down Bandys (7-3, 2-1).

Newton-Conover 8, East Burke 1

West Caldwell 8, Maiden 1: The hosts cruised, behind five first-half goals.

MOUNTAIN FOOTHILLS 2A

East Rutherford 7, Patton 2: The host Cavaliers improved to 6-2, 3-0.

Hendersonville 9, Chase 0

Polk County 3, R-S Central 1: Trevor Coldren scored for the Hilltoppers.

CATAWBA SHORES 1A-2A

Christ the King 4, Community School of Davidson 0: The Crusaders (6-1, 1-0) won this battle of conference powers, as Drew Hanson scored two goals and added an assist. Luke Bowman had a goal and an assist, and Alex Neal scored once. The Spartans fell to 4-2-2, 0-1.

Langtree Charter 5, Lincoln Charter 1: Landon Metzler’s four goals led the Lions.

Pine Lake Prep 6, Mountain Island Charter 0: Griffin Nixdorf’s two goals and three assists paced the Pride. Andrew Bosi added a pair of goals.

Salisbury 2, East Davidson 0: The Hornets improved to 9-1, 3-0.

WESTERN HIGHLANDS 1A-2A

Mitchell County 7, Draughn 2: The host Wildcats trailed only 3-2 at the half.

Albemarle 2, North Stanly 1: Lucas Megson and Chris Portillo scored for Albemarle.

Jay M. Robinson 5, Gray Stone Day 1: Chris Vides’ three goals and one assist carried the Bulldogs. Elijah Orren added a pair of assists.

Carmel Christisn 7, Concord Academy 3: Alex Guzman had two goals and an assist for Concord Academy.

Charlotte Catholic 2, Cuthbertson 1: Preston Potter and Carson Rosisitch scored for the Cougars.

Olympic 3, Chambers 1: Olympic rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit.

Piedmont 3, Forest Hills 2

Porter Ridge 2, Independence 0

Shelby 1, East Henderson 1: Carter Bridges’ first-half goal gave Shelby the lead, but East Henderson tied it on a goal with 52 seconds left.

Charlotte Catholic def. Garinger 3-0 (325-3, 25-10, 25-6): Marion Weisker had 31 assists and six digs for the Cougars (9-7, 5-1), who trail first-place Providence by a half-match. Riley Wooton had seven assists for Charlotte Catholic.

SANDHILLS 4A

Pinecrest def. Southern Lee 3-0

NORTHWESTERN 3A-4A

South Caldwell def. Freedom 3-1 (11-25, 26-24, 26-24, 25-21): Kadie Becker’s 21 kills and seven digs led the hosts to a tightly-contested victory. Kailey Franklin had 19 digs for the victors.

Watauga def. Alexander Central 3-0 (25-10, 25-20, 25-10): The Pioneers scored a sweep, as Brelyn Sturgill (eight aces, eight digs) and Brooke Scheffler (15 kills) led the way.

WESTERN FOOTHILLS 3A

East Lincoln def. North Lincoln 3-2 (20-25, 25-27, 25-17, 25-18, 25-5): The Mustangs improved to 4-2 in the conference and remained tied for third place with Hickory.

Fred T. Foard def. St. Stephens 3-0 (25-10, 25-9, 25-8): The host Tigers (10-1, 5-1) swept, protecting their No. 2 ranking in 3A by Maxpreps.

Hickory def. Statesville 3-0 (25-7, 25-21, 26-24): The Red Tornadoes are now 8-4, 4-2.

North Iredell def. West Iredell 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-12): The Warriors improved to 10-0, 5-0, remaining atop the conference.
