Ardrey Kell, Myers Park, South Meck win again in soccer Tuesday

The South Meck 4A Conference’s three soccer powers kept rolling Tuesday, with Ardrey Kell, Myers Park and South Mecklenburg each posting shutout road victories and remaining unbeaten in league play.

Ardrey Kell blanked Berry Academy 6-0, Myers Park downed Olympic 6-0, and South Mecklenburg routed Harding 9-0.

Ardrey Kell (6-2-2, 3-0) won behind the scoring of Will Hamelink and Sebastian Soto, each of whom notched two goals. Zach Bittler and Ashwin Gera each added a goal.

Josh Kirsch and David Hidalgo each played a half in goal, sharing the shutout.

Berry Academy is now 3-2-1, 0-1.

Myers Park earned its third shutout of the season, improving to 5-0, 3-0. The Mustangs were 4A state runners-up last season.

South Mecklenburg (5-3-1, 2-0) bolted to a 7-0 halftime lead and cruised against Harding. Carter Brinson had a huge day, scoring four goals. Jonathan Shembo added a pair of goals.

The logjam for the conference lead will get broken next week, when Ardrey Kell hosts Myers Park on Sept. 30.

Tuesday’s standouts

Will Hamelink (Ardrey Kell soccer): Hamelink, a senior midfielder, scored two goals and added an assist in his team’s 6-0 victory at Berry Academy. He has four goals and five assists this season and has logged either a goal or an assist in each of the Knights’ nine matches.

Jacob Laney (Porter Ridge cross-country): Laney overwhelmed the competition in the annual Union County Cross-Country Championships. He completed the 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) course in a time of 15 minutes 30.5 seconds – nearly 45 seconds ahead of the next-fastest runner.

Riley Kiser (Cherryville volleyball): Kiser, a junior setter, had 13 digs and 11 assists in her team’s 3-0 sweep of Thomas Jefferson Academy. For the season, Kiser is averaging 5.4 assists and 3.3 digs per set.

Boys’ soccer

SOUTHWESTERN 4A

Butler 3, East Mecklenburg 0: Esteban Coto’s two goals led the Bulldogs (6-2-1, 2-1) past the Eagles (3-7, -3). Anthony Vazquiz got Butler’s other goal. Noah Fasel had seven saves in goal for Butler.

Charlotte Catholic 5, Rocky River 2: Freshman Preston Potter scored two goals for the Cougars (5-4, 2-1). Elliott Johnston and Nick Potter each scored once. Rocky River is 4-2, 1-1.

Garinger 2, Independence 0: Edwin Clemente and Franquin Granada each scored, leading the Wildcats (8-2-1, 2-0).

GREATER METRO 4 4A

Cox Mill 1, A.L. Brown 1 (OT): The visiting Chargers remained unbeaten (9-0-2, 2-0-1).

CISAA

Cannon School 4, Charlotte Latin 0: Will Freidinger’s two goals and an assist helped the Cougars (3-3-1, 1-2) hand the Hawks (9-4, 2-1) their first conference loss. Ben Childress added a goal and an assist, and Dylan Kellman had two assists.

Providence Day 3, Covenant Day 1: Matthew Moore and Liam Hedinger scored for the Chargers (5-3, 2-1), who also tallied on a Covenant Day own goal. The Lions (5-2-1, 2-1) got both goals from Jayden Mackrell.

St. Stephens 1, South Caldwell 0

SOUTH PIEDMONT 3A

Concord 5, Central Cabarrus 1: The host Spiders (9-2-1, 3-0) broke a 1-1 halftime tie with a big surge in the final 40 minutes. Oliver Coreas had two goals and an assist, and Matthew Avila-Chona added a goal and two assists. Tyler Dunn scored for the Vikings (3-5-1, 2-2).

South Rowan 3, West Rowan 1: Ozzy Pulldo, Michael Coles and Grayston Steedley each had a goal for the Warriors.

WESTERN FOOTHILLS (NCISAA)

Statesville Christian 4, University Christian 3

SOUTH PIEDMONT 1A-2A

Shelby 3, Burns 2: The visiting Bulldogs (5-2-1, 2-2) built a 1-0 lead, but Shelby (8-1-1, 3-0) scored three in a row and held on. Carter Bridges scored twice, including a penalty-kick goal for the winning tally. Dylan Steeves had the Golden Lions’ other goal. Shelby is ranked third in the state in 2A by Maxpreps.

NONCONFERENCE

Cabarrus Stallions 1, Grace Academy 1: Caleb Santiago scored on an assist from Jack Zapporel for the Stallions.

Charlotte Country Day 4, Legion Collegiate 0: The host Buccaneers improved to 8-3.

Monroe 5, Piedmont 0

Victory Football Club 9, Woodlawn 0: The Monroe-based Victory FC got three goals from Ian Adams and two each from Alijah Miller and Andrew Thornford. Miller also had three assists.

Cross-country

UNION COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Weddington swept the boys’ and girls’ team championships in the county meet, held at Metrolina Christian.

In the boys’ competition, the Warriors had 22 points, followed by Cuthbertson (49), Marvin Ridge (113), Central Academy (131), Metrolina Christian (157), Union Academy (158), Porter Ridge (187), Parkwood (204) and Piedmont (223).

Porter Ridge’s Jacob Laney was the individual winner, finishing the 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) in a time of 15 minutes 30.5 seconds. That was nearly 45 seconds faster than the time of runner-up Chauncey Chen of Weddington. Third was Caden Townshend of Weddington.

In the girls’ event, Weddington had 17 points. Trailing were Cuthbertson (45), Marvin Ridge (80), Metrolina Christian (106), Porter Ridge (169), Central Academy (171), Union Academy (183) and Parkwood (228).

Weddington swept the top three individual spots, with Elizabeth Ritter, Emma Jones and Grace Hanson leading the way. Metrolina Christian’s Annie Miller was fourth.

NORTH LINCOLN MEET

Host North Lincoln swept the team titles in a meet involving Western Foothills 3A Conference teams.

Boys’ team scores: North Lincoln 18, North Iredell 77, St. Stephens 82, Fred T. Foard 117, Hickory 128, East Lincoln 144; and West Iredell 146. Connor Bagwell, Stephen Fernetti and Philip Riddle gave North Lincoln a 1-2-3 sweep of individual honors.

Girls’ team scores: North Lincoln 23; East Lincoln 67; St. Stephens 75; North Iredell 86; Hickory 129; and Fred T. Foard 178. East Lincoln’s Macy Parks was the individual winner, with Bella Wood and Lori Glaven of North Lincoln running 2-3.

Girls’ volleyball

QUEEN CITY 3A-4A

Hough def. Hopewell 3-0 (25-8, 25-7, 25-9): The Huskies’ Whitney Agar had 29 assists and eight digs, and Ella Whittington totaled 11 kills, two aces and four digs. Hough is now 12-1, 5-0.

Mallard Creek def. Chambers 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-15): Freshman Ryan Hunter had eight kills and five blocks, and Tori Carr defended with 16 digs, as the Mavericks (6-5, 4-1) remained second in the conference.

SOUTH MECK 4A

Myers Park def. Olympic 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-15): The Mustangs (6-2, 4-1) got a hard-earned victory over the Trojans (7-5, 2-3), as Molly Canipe and Maggie Ryan each had eight kills. Lia Skufca added 22 assists.

SOUTHWESTERN 4A

Providence def. East Mecklenburg 3-0 (25-9, 25-6, 25-18): The defending state 4A runners-up remained undefeated (12-0, 6-0). At the halfway point in the conference race, the Panthers lead second-place Charlotte Catholic by one match.

GREATER METRO 4 4A

Hickory Ridge def. West Cabarrus 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-18)

South Iredell def. Cox Mill 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-9): The Vikings (10-2, 6-0) reached the halfway point in the conference race in first place. Lake Norman (4-1) and South Iredell (4-2) are the top contenders.

CISAA

Cannon School def. Charlotte Latin 3-0 (25-11, 25-10, 25-11): Courtney Nix had seven aces and nine digs, as the Cougars (4-0, 3-0) remained unbeaten. Meghan Schreck had 16 kills, and Marla Nix had 10 kills.

Providence Day def. Covenant Day 3-1 (25-18, 25-17, 22-25, 27-25): The Chargers (6-8, 2-2) dumped the Lions (7-4, 2-2), behind 16 kills each from Chelsea Gilmore and Ally Macurda.

SANDHILLS 3A-4A

Pinecrest def. Union Pines 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-7): This was a battle for first place. Pinecrest is 12-1, 6-0; Union Pines is 11-3, 4-2.

BIG SOUTH 3A

South Point def. Forestview 3-1 (13-25, 25-23, 25-22, 26-24): South Point (4-7, 4-2) rallied for a closely-contested victory over the Jaguars (6-4, 3-3).

SOUTH PIEDMONT 3A

East Rowan def. Northwest Cabarrus 3-0 (25-17, 25-9, 25-21)

METROLINA ATHLETIC (NCISAA)

Gaston Day def. Gaston Christian 3-0 (25-5, 25-13, 25-8): The Spartans remained in a tie atop the conference, improving to 15-4, 4-0. Gaston Christian is 4-6, 2-2.

SouthLake Christian def. Northside Christian 3-0 (25-11, 25-6, 25-7): The visiting Eagles improved to 5-0 in the conference, staying in a first-place tie with Gaston Day.

WESTERN FOOTHILLS (NCISAA)

North Hills Christian def. Lake Norman Christian 3-2 (25-16, 25-19, 20-25, 18-25, 16-14)

University Christian def. Statesville Christian 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-18): Sophie Deese had 11 digs and 36 assists, leading the defense for the victorious Barracudas. Alyssa Drendel led the offense with six kills.

CATAWBA VALLEY 2A

Bandys def. Bunker Hill 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-20)

Maiden def. Newton-Conover 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-19): Maiden improved to 6-0, remaining in first place but just ahead of Bandys (5-0).

MOUNTAIN FOOTHILLS 2A

Brevard def. Polk County 3-1

Patton def. Hendersonville 3-1 (18-25, 28-26, 28-26, 25-22): The visiting Panthers are now 11-1, 4-1.

Salisbury def. North Rowan 3-0 (25-16, 25-11, 25-16)

West Davidson def. East Davidson 3-2

Mount Pleasant def. Jay M. Robinson 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-7): The Tigers improved to 13-1, 5-1 and remained one match behind league-leading Union Academy (6-0).

Piedmont Community Charter def. Carolina International School 3-0 (25-12, 25-4, 25-16) The hosts upped their conference record to 8-0.
