Here are this week’s winners of the Charlotte Observer’s athlete of the week

Nicole Alfers, Christ The King cross-country: The Crusaders’ freshman ran a personal-best 20:46.61 to win the Girls’ Invitational race at the United Way Invitational at Southside Park in Newton Oct. 13. Alfers beat the field by nearly 12 seconds in her victory.

Alfers got more than 46 percent of the vote this week among golfers and cross-country runners.

Hayden Barzoff, Porter Ridge soccer: The Pirates’ senior midfielder had two goals and three assists as Porter Ridge beat Piedmont and Sun Valley. He received more than 50 percent of the vote this week.

Barzoff had two assists in a 4-1 win over Sun Valley Oct. 11.

Two days later, he accounted for all three scores with two goals and one assist in 3-1 win at Piedmont.

Maggie Gehrig, Charlotte Catholic tennis: The Cougars’ senior stayed unbeaten at 30-0 this season by winning the Southwestern 4A (SW4A) singles’ title (6-4, 6-4) over Independence’s Maddie Fowler at East Mecklenburg Oct. 14. Gehrig, a Villanova University commit, earned league player of the year honors for her efforts as she is 16-0 in singles and 14-0 in doubles’ play this season.

Ella Whittington, Hough Volleyball: The Huskies’ sophomore outside hitter had 18 kills, seven digs and an ace as Hough won 3-0 at Hopewell to remain a perfect 12-0 in Queen City Athletic Conference play through last week. Whittington received 56 percent of the vote among volleyball nominees.
