Latin, Country Day collect state crowns. Who else won on a full day of state playoffs?

North Carolina’s 4A girls’ volleyball finalists from last season both went down to defeat Saturday in the quarterfinal round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association’s playoffs.

Defending 4A champion Cardinal Gibbons lost to Green Level, while last season’s runner-up, Providence, fell to neighborhood rival Ardrey Kell.

Meanwhile, Gaston Day pulled off a sweep in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association state championships, winning 2A crowns in soccer, volleyball and girls’ tennis.

Charlotte Latin took the 4A girls’ tennis championship, Charlotte Country Day knocked off Providence Day for the field hockey title, and Concord Academy captured the 3A boys’ soccer championship.

It was a busy day of playoffs across the state, and here is how Charlotte- and Raleigh-area teams fared:

Volleyball (public schools)

Top-seeded Ardrey Kell won three tightly-contested sets, sweeping fourth seed Providence in a 4A quarterfinal match. The Knights won 25-19, 25-20 and 25-23.

Ardrey Kell will host Watauga in a semifinal match Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Green Level battled back from a 2-1 game deficit and upended Cardinal Gibbons 3-2. The Gators, in only their second year of varsity sports, took the first set 25-20. Cardinal Gibbons rallied with 25-20 and 25-21 victories. But Green Level came back, winning 25-21 and 15-9. Green Level, the second seed, travels to top-seeded D.H. Conley on Tuesday in the semifinals.

Matt Kern got Trinity Academy’s goal.
