Charlotte Observer athlete, football, basketball players of the week announced

Here are the winners of this week’s Charlotte Observer high school awards.

The basketball player of the week was United Faith’s Xavier McKelvy. The 6-foot-2 senior guard averaged 31.5 points, four rebounds and five steals per game as United Faith beat Legion Collegiate and South Charlotte Thunder to open the season.

McKelvy had 26 points, four rebounds and three steals in a 77-75 overtime win at Legion Collegiate Nov. 9.

He also had 37 points, four rebounds and seven steals in an 84-78 victory over South Charlotte Thunder Nov. 12.

McKelvy also signed his national letter of intent to play basketball at Winthrop University just before the South Charlotte Thunder game.

The football offensive player of the week is Porter Ridge lineman Will Hart. He helped open way for more than 300 yards rushing in a 41-27 upset of Greensboro Grimsley Nov. 12. He had eight pancake blocks facing one of the state’s top defensive lines.

The football defensive player of the week is Porter Ridge’s Stephan Zayachowsky. Against Grimsley, he had 12 tackles, a strip and fumble recovery, two pass breakups plus seven carries on offense for 40 yards.

The athlete of the week is South Mecklenburg’s Kheynne Ona. The Sabres’ senior soccer star had one goal and one assist in a 3-1 win over A.C. Reynolds Nov. 8.

He also had two goals and one assist in 3-0 win at Southwest Guilford Nov. 11.
